    Hi Jack,

    Any idea of its value?

The same seller has a nice silver tray from the GPR btw.

      Hi Luc,

Yeah I saw that one too. It's a nice tray. Well insignia is always hard to value as you know, but the last too I've seen went for £40 and £45 I think. The sweetheart badge collectors in particular like these

      Thanks, from Jack.

Hmm, that is not as much as I thought. Let me check my wallet...

Never seen one of those before? Seems fairly interesting though! Any thoughts?

Well Guy, I never buy into stories unless I am hearing it from the vets mouth. As far as I am concerned the Denison smock was standard for the SAS in WW2. There was nothing specially made for them in regards to Camo although alot of Ebay sellers would have you believe different (Love them Windproof camo auctions ). I find the above piece interesting though. As you say the camo looks like the type found on 1st Patt Denisons which is a big positive. I would take a chance on it out of curiosity sake (if the price was cheap) but knowing ebay it will probably go crazy. Feel free to bid on it though. I have gone a bit crazy on the collection lately and I have a trip to Canada coming up in march so I will stand aside I think I will ask for additional photos from the seller for my photo archive though.

Looks quite a nice thing actually. Don't know about the story thats your field but the garment looks good. I have seen in the past all kinds of wierd and wonderful things made from Denison and Windproof materials and strangely enough most of them were legit I think I would own this if it were cheap enough! The material seems quite early too so I don't think anyone has cut up a denison to make it recently. Are you going to bid on it Des or can I have a go .

            Yours, Guy.

Hi Guys, if in reading the last post you are wondering where Guy's reply has gone, it was lost when this thread was added to this long running older thread.

Guy was so keen to answer that in between me moving the thread and closing the Des' original post that he commented and as a result his posts have gone. Sorry Guy! Luckly Des' reply contains one of Guy's replies

It certainly looks to be an interesting item and some more photos would be great.

              Cheers, Ade.

                Hi Des,

So we agree, worth having if it were cheap but not one to push the boat out for .

I know what you mean regarding stories, It's always better to hear it from the horses mouth so to speak. As regards odities I do believe many were commisioned and made for individuals or small groups but that is as far as it goes.

Elite troops are always given a certain amount of autonomy when it comes to dress, equipment etc but this is tolerated rather than sanctioned. If one examines the photos of the SAS in the first Gulf the amount of modifications to their smocks are staggering, however these were undertaken at the behest of the owner not the powers that be.

I might have a go at that smock then but as you say being ebay it will probably go mental.

                Yours, Guy.

Oh PS, I like your comment about windproofs. I guess when you are selling a set SAS sounds a lot sexier than anyone who could get them.

                  Hi Guys,

The seller has not mentioned a label. That could possibly suggest a "field/tailor made" item? In that case it would probably best not to push the boat out pricewise as you say. Unless of course there was a wartime photo out there with a bloke actually wearing the same type of smock! (what luck) Hope you win it though, then we could have a listen to some "in hand" comments and better photos.

Its interesting how groups like the Poles loved modifying Battledress Jackets and the German Elites loved specially tailored uniforms (Leather and Camo Panzer Wraps etc...) but the British and Belgian Paras were less flashy and tended mostly to go with the standard stuff but sometimes worn mixed and matched. Oh I think its certainly possible oddity items were no doubt made up. If you get it from the vet themselves or have photos to back them up then its great. The problem is if its on ebay and your hearing a second hand "story" of its origins. Thats the tricky part for me. I find it hard to use my wallet in a leap of faith, well within reason anyway

Oh yeah, one of my pet hates is people calling windproof smocks and trousers "SAS camo".
                  Its drives me mental

Amen to that . SAS, Para, Commando etc have all become buzz words for these guys to sell their crap.

I will have a bid and see what happens. It would be good to win it cos as you say I'me itching to get me hands on it and tear it apart (metaphoricaly speaking of course ). Oh well you never know it might scare the majority of buyers off.

                    Take Care Mate, Yours, Guy.

                      Hello Chaps,

I think its very OVERPRICED, its realy a common thing, that windproof smock, i had one in desert cammo of 1942 and these are less common than the one on ebay. The one i had, did i sell for 70 euro`s, i coudn`t get more for it.

Checkout the camo pattern Jeroen. It is not the conventional pattern or cut of windproof

                        Cheers, Ade.

                              Ade,

I will ask the seller for photos of the back but I am pretty certain they are fake. I handled a pair that looked almost identical to them at beltring. Have to say they are pretty convincing from the front but the reverse revealed all.

Actually, this item from the same seller is far more interesting! Check out the inscription on the blade.
