Bill, it amazes me the relaxed attitude in these guys faces. I guess it is the result of not being held in a facsist country. For the most part they looked relieved to be out of the fighting... Mike

I have a photo of my dad in fron of one of these metal huts. Which camp is this? My dad was at Mulsanne and they had their Heer breast eagles.

                              Hi,

those POW photos are gorgeous, especially with M44 uniforms in it...

Anyay, one general question about the german POW's after the capitulation in '45.
Were these "soldiers" allowed to wear their insignia still?
Or only the insiniga without swastikas etc on it?

I hope you can help me.

                              Thanks, Cheers, David

Graeme....Thanks!! I find POW pics very interesting another saga in the life of a soldier.

Mike, Many of the soldiers were happy to be out of danger and the horror of the war....there were still some fanatical Nazi's among them and of course discipline was still the order of the day.

                                Gerst.

Nice pic of your POW's in Mulsanne...I have posted of few nice pics of the same French run POW camp with the metal qwonset huts. Many of the POW's in that camp still wore their decorations and insignia.

                                David,

Canada allowed their German POW's to wear their Uniforms and Decorations throughout. In the British camps in England I believe they were allowed to wear their uniforms but without their insignia or decorations as evidenced in many of the photos I posted on this thread....after 1945 you see a change in that many POW's were issued dyed Battle dress. In American run POW camps in the USA initially they were allowed to wear uniforms and decorations and that also changed as you can see in many of the pics I and others posted they wear US uniforms either dyed or marked with PW. Now in 1945 many of the large POW enclosures spread out all over Germany conditions were pretty very bad (lack of shelter and food) and I don't think they worried too much about removal of insignia and decorations until later. The allies were overwelmed with the amount of POW's they had to care for a short period of time. Bill
