Well I guess I was wrong about the seller then. Liam, I checked a good early post war book called 'The Red Beret: The story of the Parachute Regiment at war 1940-45' by H. Saunders and there is no mention of your man in the index. Certainly odd if he was the mover & shaker that the seller claimed. I suppose this is the perfect illustration of that old Collector slogan 'Buy the item, not the story'. I must say I shuddered at some of the amounts people were going to bid on that beret. Having said that though, I see a 44 dated beret currently on eBay is not far off such amounts. The era of silly prices in British WW2 Airborne militaria is definitely upon us.

I checked a Jan 1946 Army list and he definately was an officer from the Royal Fusiliers who got the OBE but not sure what for. Apart from that I couldn't find any other mention of him, this is odd but not unheard of, I had a lot of problems researching another officer but eventually found him after a lot of digging. All that said, without anything in writing to confirm the story it is just a nice beret.

Officer details were , Maj Field 992149,
perhaps a member can research, better than me, to prove the officer did in fact receive 3 awards, ( or did not )
                many thanks.
Managed to get to the library today and found the following info(not a lot)
                Born 29/03/1917

                Regiment Royal Fusiliers(City of London)
                2Lt 26/08/37
                Lt 26/08/40
                War substantive Captain 14/03/43
                Substantive Captain 26/08/45
                Acting Maj 14/12/42 - 13/03/43
                Temp Major 14/03/43 - 14/11/44
                War Sub Major 15/11/44
                Acting Lt Col 15/08/44 - 14/11/44
                Temp Lt Col 15/11/44

As noted he was awarded the OBE 11/10/45 and he was mentioned in Dispatches on the 22/3/45, these are the LG dates.

I could not find any Info in any of the Para or R,Fusiliers reference books .

One thing I did note was that he was a 2nd Grade staff officer as a Captain working for Major General MS Chilton who was the Director Air.
However the date for this is 30/06/1946

                Thats it for now

This VC group turned up in a house clearance: 280372906481

I believe the story because theres a nice plastic victory medal ribbon on the bar

No attempt to deceive here, the VC has COPY on the reverse under the date of award the other are clearly renamed.

Take a closer look John. All the medals are fakes, not renamed.

A replacement set for who's benefit exactly? Certainly not the vets or the families, not with those ribbons and that mounting which is less than 5 years of age.

The point I am of course making is the the crazy high price these are fetching. One could purchase a good genuine set of WW1 medals for the same money, why bid on such dross?
