One that has got in under the radar, except maybe to Australians where this film was released long before it received a worldwide release on dvd, is The 39th Battalion (it was originally released under the title Kokoda) which is a great film about the fighting on the Kokoda Trail. For the realism of the conditions the troops fought in it must rank highly, from the jungle & mud to the dysentry. In terms of combat it isn't a Saving Private Ryan but it does have it's moments which are just as realistic. Watch this and I don't think you will be disappointed.
I recommend this film to everyone (and at just £4 on Aamzon it is a bargain)

For action and realistic fact Battle of Britain is No1

      A close second is Downfall

      Third is Das Boat

Cross of Iron is number four even though the story line gets a little silly

Band of Brothers is a distant No5 especialy as the guy who played the platoon leader is English, only gets in to my top 5 as i met one of the band of brothers at the war and peace show a few years ago and he was a nice fella

Recently watched '39th Battalion' which as already pointed out, is an excellent film which seems to of escaped mass media attention. Tough, gritty and extremely watchable, highy recommended to watch.

As it was Bank Holiday weekend just passed, I just had to watch 'The Great Escape' for the upteenth time on DVD. Bank Holiday weekends are just not the same without that film being on the TV schedule

                Regards Richard.

"Tunnel rats"!!! A lot of guts but no glory. If you want a realistic flick, this is the one

                  cheers

An Australian Film called "Gallipoli" with Mel Gibson and Mark Lee was excellent! One of my favourites.
                    Cheers, Steve

"The mortal storm" 1940 /Jimmy stewart/ margaret sullavan

The Nazi Party's rise to power has disastrous consequences for a German family in this drama. Victor Roth (Frank Morgan) is a college professor teaching in Germany in 1933 who leads a peaceful and contented life with his wife Emelie (Irene Rich), son Rudi (Gene Reynolds), daughter Freya (Margaret Sullavan), and stepsons Otto (Robert Stack) and Erich (William T. Orr). However, Adolph Hitler's emergence as Germany's ruler has an unexpected impact on their lives. Fritz (Robert Young) and Martin (James Stewart) both vie for Freya's hand in marriage, but anti-Nazi activist Martin is forced to flee to Austria, while Freya is disturbed by Fritz's membership in a pro-fascist group. Victor repudiates Hitler's theories about Aryan superiority in class, and he not only loses his teaching position, but he is sentenced to a concentration camp. And while Emelie and Rudi join Freya as she tries to escape to Martin's new home in Austria, they find themselves hunted by Otto and Erich, now members of the Hitler Youth. The Mortal Storm was perhaps the most explicitly anti-Nazi film made in Hollywood prior to America's entry into WWII, and it resulted in all of MGM's product being banned in Germany. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

Definitely A bridge too far. That movie is the most accurate war movie made in history and the movie costed over 25 milion dollar which was never seen in that time.

Must say that Das Boot is in a good second spot. especially the extended, extended, extended version.

                            regards

Zulu should be a top pick in the poll and All Quiet on the Western Front. Guess it depends on an individual's interest. Most of the top picks are WWII flicks.
