I thought The Highest Honor was really good.

'The Secret of Santa Vittorio' was another good one I haven't seen in years. If I remember correctly there was some kettenkrad action in that one. And Hardy Kruger wore a cool SP wrap and M-43.

Another favorite is 'Triple Cross' with Christopher Plummer, based on a true story, I believe, about a London safe-cracker who turns double-agent to save his skin. Yul Brynner and Gert Frobe are great as German intelligence officers. Super uniforms, for the most part, but if this is the film I'm thinking about, there is a West German flag blowing prominantly in the breeze at a border crossing.

BATTLEGROUND. Produced in 1949, just 5 years after the Battle of the Bulge.

Shocked! To see Zulu missing from the options listed! Personally, I'm a strong supporter of Operation Burma, even though I hate how the Yanks are the ones fighting Japanese aggression in a theatre they had little experience of.

like most people its really hard to say which one is the best but the one that really moves me and will always be in my heart is the color version of "all Quiet on the Western Front." I saw that when I was in 3rd grade. (I believe) watched it with my Parents and they allowed me to stay up late to see the ending. from that point on I always had those "crazy" thoughts of running thru the "field of Honor". truely a moving movie as not one of the characters makes it out. with the final moment really giving you the whoa factor. I have seen it on Amazon for comedy prices, but have had no luck finding it elsewhere.

                    Patrick.
Good news. I just ordered and received LA 317 Section in DVD. It was just released and not at the outrageous prices found before this release for copies. The website is www.ima-usa.com which is Interntional Military Antiques in NJ. The price was 29.95 US plus 9.57 US shipping and it came in about 4 days.

Through 24 pages of comments & discussing additional "war movies" I have yet to see anybody mention THE BIG RED 1, with Lee Marvin, THE DIRTY DOZEN...once again with Lee Marvin, a Old, Old forgotten movie called FIVE GRAVES TO CAIRO...(1943) & a very few mentions of THE BATTLING BASTARDS OF BATTAN, with Rod Taylor(i think anyway). Or THEY WERE EXPENDABLE starring JOHN WAYNE. & IN HARMS WAY starring Kirk Douglas & once again John Wayne. How bout PT109 starring JFK? To me the most distrubing Scene in a movie...The knife fight in SPR.

Interesting choices. I could list my favorites, but sometimes it's not the battle sequences that are so compelling.

Sand Pebbles : I was 14/15 when I saw it and with Vietnam just revving up. Did not glorify war at all.

All Quiet on the Western Front: The original. Saw this one younger still and it put the standard US war movie to shame.

Decision Before Dawn: Perhaps a bit cliched, but it really captured what appeared to be the mood.

Zulu: Before the battles begin, the panoramic sweep of the camera established how alone they were; the weak sun upon the holstered pistol of Chard (?)

Das Boot: By far the best, established the claustrophobic conditions. First time I saw it my German was just good enough to not have to read all the subtitles. Far superior in German.

Saving Private Ryan: No other war movie I have seen has established the realistic terror it achieved in the first 20 minutes. Nothing I have seen anywhere compares to it. To those who poo poo this one about German stereotypes, it was not about the Germans. When the group of 4 were sitting on the steps listening to Edith Piaf(?) prior to the climactic battle scene, there is a pause when nobody says anything.

To those who suggested Talvisota - The Winter War, thanks! The whole thing is on You Tube in 20 8-10 minute sections. Silly towards the end, but the first half of the movie is great, and provides a whole new( for those of us who missed it) perspective of a very far off place, and little known war.

                          Top 4 for me:

                          1. Winterwar (Original finnish name: Talvisota)
                          IMDB Link: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0098437/

                          2. The Unknown Soldier 1955 edition (Original finnish name: Tuntematon Sotilas)
                          IMDB Link: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0048752/
If you watch one of battlescenes on this one sharply, you will notice funny detail in movie: Original German Panzerkampfwagen IV is acting as an russian tank with red star on side of the turret.

                          3. Stalingrad
                          IMDB Link: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0108211/

                          4. Die Brücke
