Just watched Stalingrad for the first time in a while today. Really good film. One thing though, am I crazy, or do the EK packets that are dropped off near the end of the film say "Eisernes Kreuz 1. Klasse 1942"? I swear it does, am I crazy or has this been discussed in the past? It just struck me as odd because it seems they did a decent job of uniforms and what not, even the packet looked good, just. . . wrong.

The Great Raid
A Bridge too Far
Original All Quiet on the Western Front
Saving Private Ryan (Opening Scene)
Thin Red Line ( I know, I know, but I liked it)
Tora Tora Tora
My latest favorite-Letters from Iwo Jima. I'm not an expert on WW2 Japanese Militaria, but this movie comes the closest to portraying the Japanese fighting man as anything I've ever seen.

War films
I suppose it's taste pure and simple, for me it's the individual and the horror induced by experience:
Paths of Glory- Kubrick
Attack - Aldrich
The Red badge of Courage- Huston
All quiet on the Western Font -original,Milestone
Come and See -Kravschenko
Europa Europa- Holland
As for individual performances:
George C Scott -Patton
Cross of Iron- Maximillian Schnell
Jurgen Procknow-Das Boot

The Problem with war movies is that people into Militaria become very picky on accuracy..this means that the tanks used in films like a bridge too far or Patton are totally a mess.I believe if we talk about accuracy it would probabbly have to be Band of Brothers, Saving Private Ryan and Schindler List.(all Spilebergs movies) But my favorite war action movie is Gladiator.

What Von Ryan's Express did not make the cut?
Could be good reason for that!
I have to admit I love WW1 aviation films, but, only one made my top 5 movie list.
I will list them in no particular order.
We Were Soldiers ( I saw a TV interview of LTC Moore soon after the film was released, and he said they did it justice, except the hollywood end and the time he said a prayer for a soldier, LTC Moore said he had no time to pray as there was too much going on.)
Dawn Patrol, WW1 aviation with real WW1 aircraft and Errol Flynn & David Niven.
The 300 Spartans
Zulu
The Winter War, a great film even subtitled.
I must say I have not seen the uncut Das Boot. I was going through a divorce when it was released in the U.S., but, I did just get it yesterday and can't wait to watch it.

Apart from the mainstream movies and movie culture: I am getting interested in seeing all the Samuel Fuller Movies, due to his attention to period army details for example and description of reality on the ground. I know back in the day movie makers were not so hot on this when he attempted to portray things in this way. Also many locally made movies and films over the years which have not made it into the mainstream are very good! Especially those about former Yugo in WW2, many (most all) the props are 100% real and some Like DRvar are even from that Battle! ....But also have dissappeared since 1990-91!

Yes, Van Ryan's express is a great movie. I try to ignore the accuracy problems. Every movie has them. I think most of them are a little commical...............It is good to know 9mm parabellum has a range of a thousand yards plus. I may try to to use it next time I hunt out west. (airplane shoot down scene with MP40's).
Saving Private Ryan(as great a movie as it is)has a funny too. 03A4's don't have two different scopes that get taken off every time somebody decides to shoot. The M73B1 scope most have is a small permanent mount. The other extreme possibility is a Unertl monster that only the Marines would have.
Sands of Iwo Jima.
Midway
