Still, if you want to believe that you discovered a rare set of SS pipes, be my guest. One question, though...how did the SS feel about smoking? Would that particular organization really have been procuring smoking articles for official distribution to its troops?!
I have been collecting German militaria for many years, over 50 years, and have found many great items in years past while traveling shops, etc. thru Europe. I know for a fact that German ss men, and all the other branches of service smoked pipes. In past years, have also been at many reunion meetings and one or more of the vets were still smoking a pipe. There was no rule/reg that prevented it, in fact the German Military equivalent of a PX made cigaretts available.
The box is also the war time variety, the markings are correct, and I'd be glad to buy this great find.

I think the whole point of the negative comments posted so far is not to prove that german soldiers of any branch smoked the pipe nor that the pipes featured in the first posts of this thread are original period made pipes (which is correct) but the fact that the SS related markings applied on the original wartime box are indeed a forgery.

Not big enough of a deal to be a lie.

You are thinking about one box of pipes, not the dozens, perhaps hundreds of assorted old pieces of crap these guys slap fake labels and markings on to make a profit. Simple economics: low price and small profit margin is fine if you sell high volume.

You are also thinking like an American, not an eastern European flea market merchant, to whom doubling the profits on 5 and 10 buck items is significant. Just go to any flea market in Europe and you will see loads of this crap. They have completely made up fantasy items and original period items of ALL sorts, like cameras, medical instruments, kitchen items, whatever, all with bogus nazi markings, to increase their "value." None of these items cost much, but, if those markings enable a merchant to sell his crap instead of some other merchant, that is significant in his life/world!

Brad, sometimes you cannot stop People from rushing to the Table and drinking the Kool-Aid. Jim Jones seemed like such a "Nice Guy".

Your summation of the inner workings of the mind of an Eastern European Flea Market Merchant are on point.

I lived in Prague in 1995 and 1996, and travelled a great deal in Eastern Europe at the time. Spot on assessment, i think.

I told you not to drink the Kool-Aid. And look, nobody listened.

The one on eBay is obviously not the same one in this thread, probably we will see more of these popping up as well.

I doubt these 3 guys got their pipes out of a fake box on Ebay. looking at the details of the 2 boxes, the box on Ebay is obviously not the same box that started this thread.

No kidding. That's the point, Einstein. The fact that two such nearly identical "rare" items just happen to turn up on the market at the same time (and likely lots more that we are unaware of) points to the inescapable conclusion that someone is mass producing these today by doctoring-up old boxes of pipes with bogus stamps and labels! Duh.

By the way, why do you guys keep digging up old photos of SS men smoking? No one ever said that they didn't. The point was that it is unlikely that the SS (as an organization) would officially endorse and support the habit by providing pipes to their men, not that the men didn't smoke at all. Wake up and smell the logic.
