    Hmmm...
"M.Dv 374/1 regelt die Markierung "N" für Nordsee und "O" für Ostsee. " Quelle Knirim Band I, Seite 186 unten "O" ist selten und wurde später nicht mehr markiert.
Navy service regulation 374/1 decide that marking N stands for Nordsee, and O for Ostsee.
Knirim´s book on german clocks. Page 186, O is rare and was later no longer used.
These markings are well known on K98 rifles and 98 bayonets. Where the O is a plain large O, the N on bayonets often look like an scriptual N.
But on leather items the N and O is not used. Only the navy eagle.

As I said, hmmm... I like to see a dating on that 374/1. But M.dv does not sound like an imperial regulation.

Update. It was used 1936-38. But for weapons and equipment with the troops. I am not sure what equipment means. Something that could be carried or any military item?
    https://www.deutsche-digitale-biblio...7FVIBKGEIL25NV
    No scans available. Pity.
There are 2 versions. One from 1936 and with extra deckblätter (additions) until 1938. A new version came in 1937, and had deckblätter untill at least 1940.

According to this, we should be looking for 374/10

      Dear Michael,
I think you have missunderstod the word Beobachtungsuhr.
The were used for navigation. In English they are called Deck watch. In German Beobachtungsuhr or short B-Uhr. Used by the navy and the airforce.
As the big chronometer could not be moved the deck watch was used to"shoot" the sun and to fetch correct time from land.
Deck watches was also used instead of bigger chronometers on smaller ships like uboats.
Artillery used stop watches or chronograph.

Your theory about N meaning Nachrichtendienst is interesting but you have not convinced me yet.
This discussion about N and O has been going on for a long time. I think somewere I saw some documents refering to 08 pistols (lugers) were it was said to stand for Nord- and Ostsee. To me that is the most logical explanation although I think there should be more items marked O.
I really like the Knirim book. Excellent photographs. But it is more a mixed up collection of photos as it is a straight forwar book of facts.

The Nordsee and Ostsee navy stations did mark weapons like that. Undoubtedly, and it did show where the weapons belonged.
          Same goes for lugers.
But if that was also applied to other equipment Items, I don´t know.

It is a confusing theme. here are the general regulation on markings, then there are regulations on how to mark specific equipment, if at all. Add to that at least 2 major changes in the organisation of the Kriegsmarine between 1934 and 1945.
I think it will be a help to divide the explanations into different time periods. Otherwise it gets unneccessarily complicated.

You are right, Art. officers used stop watches. My mistake.

I am sorry to hear the Knipin book is like that.
I had hoped it would have more background material. But 25 years ago, that was where those interested in Lugers were. Compiling info on the pistols in the collections. The books on lugers available today contains much more backgrund information than photo´s of the guns.
I can hope we will go there, for binoculars, and for clocks and watches.

Hello all, what an incredible site. I knew hardly anything about my grandfathers binoculars. What i do know. My grand dad better known as Captain Joe! I was told that he had captured a U boat, a member of his crew removed the binoculars from the bridge of the U boat and presented him a trophy as a personal victory over the third reich. I really hope that the documentation I have can prove the province and increase the value as I'm extremely motivated to put up for auction or sell for the right price.I would appreciate any help, best way to sell, fair price. Does anyone want to purchase? I have a article I will include, not sure which paper, under picture of my grandfather it says Capt. Joseph Dalkowski of Jersey City who transported close to 300,000 German prisoners during war is congratulated by Col. Harry W, Mass, Camp Shanks Commander. Tag line Last Nazi POWs Leave In Relative Opulence. Healthier and have more money than when they arrived on american soil. Should I also scan and include for instance my grandfather ID card Captain of Port dated Sep 11 1944? US Merchant Marine document or picture ID 4i29/58? I also have his Continuous certificate of Discharge, some sort of log book with name of vessel, official # and description of voyage. Will these items help with province ? I have a lot more.

left click on your profile name at upper right corner, then look at lower right side, choose: albums. Upload photo´s there.
Then copy-paste the address of a photo into your text. That will publish it on this site.
A photo of the serial number would be nice.
