This was known as the 8cm GrW 73, developed by Rheinmetall-Borsig AG and introduced as trials type in 1944. This 8cm mortar offered a maximum range of 4500 metres (nearly twice the range of the GrW. 34) utilising the new Wurfgranate 42 mortar bomb. It could also use the standard 81mm ammunition and offered improved mobility as it was slightly lighter than the 8cm GrW.34 itself.

      GrW 73 Bipod weight?

      Hi Wojtek,
I was reading your previous query about this 8cm GrW 73. This mortar is also sometimes refered to as the GrW 34/1. You said that your friend has a Ground-dug Base-plate and Bipod for this mortar. I wonder if you could get him to weigh the Bipod and Base-plate? Also, perhaps some photos? I would very much like to see them.

Very nice and rare Zubehör, Maarten.

...But you won't get far without these either

I have one complete carboard box, and one loose lid from another box.

          Hi,

I was just thinking that it would be very useful to know the correct German names for all the parts of the 8cm GrW 34 mortar. I am sure that members of this forum have a wealth of knowledge about this, particularly those that speak German. I made a list of the main parts that I think I know the German names for, together with associated items. Here it is:

          ZWEIBEN (Bipod).

          Tragevorrichtung (backpack carrier)

          BODENPLATTE (Base Plate).

          WERFER ROHR (Mortar Tube).

          Rohrschelle (Barrel clamp).
Berichlusskappe mit Tragegurt (Barrel cover with carrying strap).

          RICHTAUFSATZ (Sights).

Perhaps others would like to add to this, or correct it?

          Regards,
          Draoich

            Hi Draoich,

I think most of this is correct.

            It's ZWEIBEIN (bipod)

And the Richtaufsatz for the 8cm mortar is the RA35 (sight)

You also have the STRICHPLATTE which goes onto the tube with grades
and distances marked on it (very rare).

I think Bjorn will be able to add some more

Very nice Bjørn! And the items you have posted a few pages back are also stunning.
I am still looking for one of those without cartridges. I have only one for the 5cm.

Instead of Tragevorrichtung can be used Tragegestell.

Apologize to the forum moderator, still dont know how to post and attach pictures at the Forum "For sale", if it is possible, remove the topic.
I want to offer to the mortar collectors a baseplate for s.Gr.W.34. The condition of Bodenplatte is good, it is a little bit rusty, a several weeks ago it was taken out of the lake not far from Minsk in Belarus. Well 70 years under the water.
If you are interested in purchasing, let me know, I will send you the photos.
                  PM or e-mail me: s.chuk88@tut.by

The parcel can be sent to any part of the world.

                  Regards, Sergey.

                    Hi All,
Thanks to Floriskok and Sergey for adding some more names to the list. I have a few more as well:

Die Sporne des Zweibeins – Spike ends of the Bipod
                    Felssporn – Spiked Rock base-plate
                    Munitionskiste – ammunition box
                    Wurfgranate – mortar grenade
                    6400 Teilstrichen – 6400 mils

                                Wow Maarten,

That is really good! It looks like a really nice manual in great condition. The information is very appropriate.
