I count 8 panzer crash helmets/berets on the pz grave photo..
I wonder if they hanged those hats there just for show or if they belonged to the KIA's... and did they just let the hats hang there afterwards?

Actually there are nine Panzer Berets if you look as Akiras photo of the same scene. Considering Pz II's only have a crew of 3 it appears that more than one Panzer had been destroyed. Whether Berets or Helmets they where placed on the cross or the Graves of the fallen as part of a tradition and I don't believe they collected them up...they stayed put...until of course they were removed post-war by the locals or Graves registration teams relocating the soldiers into larger cemetries.

                  Grave 1

Here are two of my latest. I've been absent from this thread for far too long, but my absence wasn't my fault.

                        Hi Gerdan,

Thanks for looking him up. Did you find anything about the men in the graves photo right above it?

                          Hi John,

I think I could identify the names of both soldiers: Gefreiter Heini Leis and Schütze Hans Schott/Scholt - but could not find the right names and dates in the list of the Volksbund.

                            Other graves

                            Hi Gerdan,

Thanks for your help in this matter. It's much appreciated. From what you found out, it would seem that Ltn. Piorreck, is still in the grave in the photo. Is that what you feel is the case? Piorreck, is that an uncommon last name? I've never heard of it before. Where in Russia is Tuganowo?

                            Regards,
                            John
