Ralf

if you read the name exactly in the way it is written on the wooden cross it is "Meiners" without any doubts and not "Meinders".

But if you take his rank "Uffz" and the date of his KIA which is the 1 Sep 1939 as it is written on the back of the photo you could have found the right guy.

Or the name on the cross is misspelled or the name in the Volksbund list is not correct.
But we do not know.

Gerdan

Hi Ralf, Gerdan,

It looks like Ralf found the right man, however as Gerdan states, we'll never know for sure. You would think the men who laid him to rest would know how he spelled his last name as they were more than likely the men who served with him. So maybe the Volksbund misspelled the name, since the other information Ralf found seems to match what we know, that is rank and date of death are correct. Sad he turned 23 just 4 days before being killed.

John

You never know. The Volksbund can be unpredictable sometimes. I was searching for a man, and was focusing all of my research on what I thought was his information on their site (same name), but it turns out in like March of 2008 they found the actual soldier's grave (in a Gulag) so I had to start all over again...

Hi,

Thanks for posting Hans' death card. It clears up the spelling of his last name.
