Well someone tipped him off about the thread because he pulled the auction.

Sorry to hear about people trying to come back under different names. Seams its a common trick when a forum changes ownership.

Here's a fantastic item for your to add to your collection Des.......from an old forum favourite.......

Apart from the fancy paint job, what do you guys think of the stampings on the liner? Doesn't look quite right to me.

                        Wartime or post-war ?

So, do we think the overpaint is wartime or post-war ?

Interesting to see the full black diamond was painted on first.
.. Then the red half was overpainted.

To me, I think that someone copying the flash might have just painted half and half .. thus omitting the fine black boarder on the red side.
However, ... the scratches that run from the base paint through the flash, look a little "strategic" ... whether deliberate or not, always something to be cautious of.

I was watching this one, but as I suspected it went out of my budget. I think that the diamond is a decal and not painted, that's why it has a slight border, also, I think the postwar airborne RA flash is a square. As for the colour, it doesn't look like postwar green to me. As it's an early helmet the chances of it having had a period repaint would be higher than, say, a 44/45 dated web strap, many of which that are on ebay have had a postwar repaint. It is wise for us to be cautious, especially with high value items but don't let's get hung up on helmets all having to be the exact same colour, I have a number of 'Tommy' helmets and have had many more through my hands and they are all different in some way. I felt that this example ticked the right boxes and had I a bit more cash available would have had a go, I'm sure others out there felt the same or it wouldn't have gone so high.
