Forgot about The Dogs of War

More of an action/adventure film though. The acting was so-so and some of the details were screwy (9mm quad? Wassup with that? 25mm Manville gun munitions far fetched), but it was a cool flick overall.

I was disappointed in SPR for reasons already mentioned by others. Watched about 45 minutes of the newer Thin Red Line. Bye bye.

Band of Brothers for its one or two minor issues has no equal.

When Trumpets Fade was ok. Got Das Boot on DVD. Never seen it, but I'm sure it's good.

    Anyone remember The Misfit Brigade?

My vote is for "other", for the BoB movie! Old, but gold! I think it should be one of the options in the poll. Well, no Americans in it, but still about WWII

Richard C..."Ist you all indoctrinated!?" "Ist you all good little Hitlers!?"

I'm sorry...but Gods and Generals deserves no place anywhere. That movie, in my opinion was horrible. In most cases, the battle reenactments can save a bad plot...but not here. Honestly the battle reenactments were nowhere on par with Gettysburg. G and G used too many computer generated explosions and focused too much on Stonewall and the women. P.S. Stonewall was NOT the perfect guy.

Johnny Got His Gun was made into a movie!? That is one of the most haunting books I've ever read I don't know if I could handle a movie. The author really made you understand this guy and when he conveyed the drug "trips" in the hospital it came out amazingly. I especially like the whole section comparing the young boy who enlists to Jesus playing blackjack with the other dead soldiers...in response to "Gosh Jesus, this stuff is mighty good liquor"

"It ought to be good...it's sixteen years old"

        Haunting...

I'm gonna have to go with "A Bridge Too Far" as the best...they really did their research and although it may have some flaws, it is all in all an amazing war film. I could watch it over and over day after day.

What about "Castle Keep"? Noone gives that movie credit...I'll admit that it lacks alot, but the potential of that movie and some of the quotes are just spectacular.

"They both got up in the forest of dead roses and moved towards the stricken castle. They walked and staggered in fine formation toward the moat. The water was cool clear blue. They passed through the gates and up the wide marble stairs to the tall lone turret on top...where they could see all the way home."
"Lieutenant Aberjack, Seargeant Rossi and Private Clarboi all dead in the rosegarden sir."
"Now we can raise the drawbridge..."

Or something to that extent...a cool movie if you read into it.

Stalingrad and Das Boot are my two overall favorites, by far. I suppose I prefer Stalingrad a little bit more, though, since my primary interest is the eastern front. However, Das Boot has better acting and seemed more authentic, at least to me.

          What about "Castle Keep"?
I thought that movie was a real yawnfest; one of the few WWII movies that actually bored me.

I stayed up last night and watched The Big Red One.I haven't seen it for a few years,so I thought I'd watch it again. They had some nice German tunics and field equipment. The Afrika corps guys looked pretty authentic better watch out for those helmets there probably aged well by now.The field grey tunics looked like the post war stuff. The tanks well if you like german shermans with the cross ,but hey these guys were on a budget. Not as good as I remembered but a goog way to kill an hour an a half.........

Just catching up on reading posts about the movies:

About "Twelve O'clock High" I attended a leadership school for Senior Petty Officers once where they used the movie as a final summary of various leadership techniques and what could go right or wrong, It all worked when you looked at it in one aspect.

The Robert Mitchum/Deborah Kerr movie "Heaven Knows Mister Allison"

Got to say all in all a good list of movies so here is mine:

              1. Zulu (watch it at least once a year)

              2. Any of the "Sharpe's ......" Series with Sean Bean

              3. Bridge over the River Kwai

              4. Great Escape

              5. Twelve O'clock High

              6. Pork Chop Hill

              7. We were Soldiers Once

              8. Sahara

              9. Sink the Bismarck

              10. Kelly Heroes (As one of the funniest)

              Honorable Mention:

              "From here to Eternity"

              "Dr. Strangelove"

                Das Boot for me
Interested in candid/private Hitler, KIA, and Holocaust photos. Also any AH related memorabilia--silverware, linen, crystal, china...

                  Hello all,
While not strictly movies with battle scenes etc I would consider movies like Watch on the Rhine or Edge of Darkness,The Mortal Storm and 13 Rue Madelaine, among the best movies about WW2. As a fan of movies from the 40's I could go on and on but I would be hard pressed to pick just one movie about ww2 as my favorite. Just my opinion. Newer movies such as the Dirty Dozen or The Devil's Brigade would rank right up there with WW2 movies in my opinion also.

For accuracy I have to go with The Winter War, the scene where the river explodes is purely awesome. Also the fact that the Russian tanks that are used were the ones actually captured during the war is just too cool!

For humor I have to go with The Cross of Iron, Peckinpahs use of Slo Mo is HILARIOUS!

For leadership skills Twelve O'clock High is the movie for me.

For a depressing movie Stalingrad is it!

Foa an uplifting movie The Wind and the Lion. The scene where the Marines double time through the streets of Tripoli allways gets me going.

For Deutsche Fallschirmjaeger it has to be The Eagle Has Landed. It's got some problems but overall it's a good show.

And finally for use of real stuf It Happened Here by Mollo and Brownlow is a real hoot. The scene where the german marching band marches into Trafalgar Square!! is simply spectacular

                      2, Das Boot
                      3,The Hill
                      4,Flight of the Phoenix
but the all time best has to be if you will let me, (It is set in the
                      American Civil War)
                      1. The Good, The Bad and The Ugly. The performance by Eli Wallach
who plays Tuco (The Bad) is first class. and not only that, my first
choice is the only one we all no the theme music to.

                          'Cross of Iron' !

While I did enjoy Das Boote and Saving Private Ryan, and cannot count the number of times I've watched Platoon, love Where Eagles Dare and The Eagle has landed for the FJ's, my favorite is Cross of Iron.

One can argue any movie is cheesey, but its a whole different perspective than what is typically shown!
If only I could be half the man my dog thinks I am

'To Hell and BacK" is my favorite. How many movies that were previously mentioned(and I liked all of them btw),had the actual Medal of Honor winner playing himself?

My second favorite is,well,I don't know the name of it!It was an old black and white Italian movie(no sub-titles either!),about an Italian soldier who was fighting on the Russian Front when he had enough, and walks home. Most of the movie was his adventures walking back to Italy. The only time I saw it was over 30 years ago,but several scenes are still clear in my mind(I think!).
