and twelve o'clock high?
Hi to everybody!
Das boot is for me the best second world war movie. Perfect the uniform, accessories, characters, pathos.... the curve fall a little bit at the end....with the death of almost everybody, but....
Apocalypse now is the great war movie... could speak of all the wars, without flags, religion, mans. Incredible the photography director (storaro) that gave to the film a beautyful sense of phatos...
Nobody have talk about 'twelve o'clock high' with gregory peck. A bible for the usaaf militaria collectors, with original A2s, B3s, B10s....B 17 flying fortress...
and the sequence of the sky fight are original war movie, with the fighter that flight between the fortress while the gunner try to catch someone with its gun...
Anybody have seen it?
cheers, frank

Not listed but 'Battle of Britain' would get my vote. Made in 1969 using real aircraft and no CGI.
When I say real aircraft, it has to be accepted that the 109s were powered by Rolls-Royce Merlin engines....how ironic Same applied to the He-111s. They were as I remember at that time part of the Spanish Air Force ?
The Ju 87 'Stukas' were radio-controlled models.
The film did not 'demonize' the LW and I think was fair to both sides.
Fantastic dogfight scenes and I remember reading somewhere that a couple of stunt pilots were killed during filming
The flight clothing worn by the aircrews appears to be accurate to my eyes. There is a scene where a group of LW fighter pilots are in a bar discussing the merits of a Spitfire (in German with subtitles ) and the mixture of flight clothing is amazing... I wonder what happened to these items ?? And who made them ?? Or were they original ??
Regards,
Bob

battle of britain
dear viscount,
also the 'battle of britain', traslated in italy as 'the long days of the eagle' have almost perfect uniforms. Fantastic the LW 'double breast' general tunic and the dogfights. An expert eyes can detective the fake LW lifevest and the postwar mae west for the raf pilots. But is only a wrong drop in a beautyfull see!
There's true, the 109s and the 111s are licence build from the hispano factory, and carried a merlin engine, as his english counter-part...sometime the history could be very tragically fanny. They're easly detect from the diverse shape of the engine cowl, that show the face of the Me 109 very similar to the spit one. About the 111s the only difference is the air cooler below the engines...too big for a original 111..

Many excellent movies have been mentioned in this thread and I feel the following two should also be added:
1). BATTLEGROUND:
This 1949 MGM classic stars Van Johnson, John Hodiak, Ricardo Montalban, James Whitmore and many others. It's the story of the 327th Glider Infantry (101st Airborne) at Bastogne.
2). LOST COMMAND:
This movie stars Anthony Quinn, Alan Delon and George Segal. It's starts out with a group of French paratroopers in the closing days of Dien Bien Phu and then follows them through the Algerian War (including the battle of Algiers).

For a more peripheral WW2 film I love "Soul Survivor" loosly based on the story of the US B-24D bomber "Lady Be Good" that went down in the Libyan desert in 1943.

coming in late on this one, but one of my all time favorites is The Winter War . Excellent use of original Russian equipment. However, the crème de la crème is this has to be about the only war film that I've seen artillery portrayed accurately. What other movie has shown the true effects of an artillery bombardment. The air being sucked out of the trenches when it lands. Remember, soldiers were not only killed by fragments and concussions, but also by lack of oxygen...I will admit though, the movie does have it's slow periods, but it's top of the list for me...Another good one is, We Were Soldiers. A favorite among the troops while I was in Iraq...

Battle of the Bulge. Because:
"Today I was given command of a brigade of Tiger Tanks... when I have a brigade of tanks, that is reality."
"From now on, until we clear this minefield, your men will go ahead of my tanks."
The Germans singing and stomping their feet to the Panzerlied was a great scene too.
Robert Shaw played a great Oberst Hessler.
Best regards! TomMihi libertas necessest!

ww2 movies
Hi
I just wanted to tell everyone the movies I liked. I thought U 571 was a pretty good movie. I also saw The greatest Raid to me that was another good movie. I somewhat like saving private ryan. I just had a question in the end of that movie does Tom Hanks with that pistol knock out the german Tiger Tank or does the P 51? I always thought the P 51 knocked it out becaue Matt Damon said their P 51 tank busters. Just wanted to know
I also read a book on the memories of war in stalingrad with that Russian SNiper the movie and book are 2 different stories. oh well
thanks
scott
