Hello to all, my choice would have to go to "Cross of Iron", great movie, great director and a superb performance from a talented cast full of stars.

Hard to imagine now that the movie was made in 1976/1977 and was a joint Anglo/German movie which was anti-war and anti-Nazi. Remember this was made just after the Vietnam war and anti-war sentiment was high in the Western world at that time. The director wanted to show that soldiers & their families can be the real victims of war and bad politcians. He did this with real tanks, vehicles, uniforms, weapons, human empathy and graphic violence.

Love that line in the film were Steiner is asked what he will do after the war and he says, "prepare for the next one, do you think they will ever forget us or forgive us" Pretty well sums it up when yo think about it.

The book it is based on called "The Willing Flesh" is a good read too which as could be expected explains more than the film.

        Thats my vote, Chris

Thank you Robert, I really appreciate this. You would not know if there is a directors cut of this movie on DVD I could buy ? I know you can get the standard movie but I am after a version with the extra scenes and the add-on bits about how it was made.

            Best regards, Chris

I see you have the poster. Have you ever seen the Australian / New Zealand version which was not in colour but a bold graphic version in the colours red, white and black only ?

Nice to touch base with someone else who really appreciates this film, Chris

Sea of Sand (1958) (I think the only movie about the LRDG?)

"A small British army team is sent to destroy a German petrol dump as part of the preparation for a major attack in the North African campaign. Whilst they are there they spot a large number of tanks and realise that army intelligence must be informed or some Tommies are going to be in for a nasty surprise. The Germans are equally determined that they should not reach their base, and a tense chase across the desert is the result."

                      My choices are:

                      0815 - Just totally fab.

Die Brucke - Shame about the tanks!

Wunschkonzert - I just love this film.

                      Der Untergang - Wow.

Cross of Iron - In German its even more awesome!

Young Lions - The way the kid sings the "Horst Wessel" just cracks me up!

Das Boot - Origianl 6 part series in German. (Cant watch the ending without crying.)

They didn't destroy a real tank.

At the German version of wikipedia they mentioned that all tanks were made of wood.

Das Boot - TV and movie was filmed as one big part but after the production they cut it in different ways, one version as movie (later as directors cut) one as TV show.

Die Brücke was actually based on an real event if I remember correctly.

The Unit was from 38 SS Grenadier division "Nibelungen", but that wasnt political correct in Germany at that time or now for that matter. This division was made up by mostly young student from Sonthofen and senior cadets from SS Junkerschule Bad Tölz. I actually interview a couple of them.
                              BTW actor
Hardy Krüger was part of Nibelungen and have even made an interview about his service in this unit.
