I started reenacting in 1983 as a Confederate in ACW, then in 1986 doing German in WW2. I did German WW1 for a short time but those 2000 mile trips back east were too far (since there were no WW1 events near where I lived) I am over 50 now and my work keeps me too busy to fully participate. I must say that I had a lot of fun over the years and the hobby certainly has grown. The Farb Factor has certainly improved too except that there are still too many overweight reenactors out there. I can't figure out why someone will spend thousands on a premier uniform and gear but won't get below 30% body fat. Even the Volkssturm didn't have that many fat guys in it, let alone someone portraying a member of an elite unit such as the 101st Airborne or a Waffen SS soldier. These guys were supposed to have grown up in the Depression and have been living off of a military diet for some time. My suggestion albeit unenforceable would be that only those under 35 and in excellent condition be permitted to portray the elite. If you have a big "Budweiser Tumor" hanging over your belt, then you are a farb unless you are doing the impression of a cook in the rear or Hermann Goering.
If someone was to look at the ration of SS and US airborne units in reenacting, they would have thought that WW2 should have been called SS vs Airborne. SS units made up somewhere in the neighborhood of 10% of the German armed forces by about 70% of the reenactor units. Airborne units comprised probably less than 10% and about 50% of the reenactor units if not more.
There needs to be more people willing to portray the "ordinary"soldiers. I find it amusing that the reenactors of these elite units actually seem to consider themselves an "upper cut" above someone portraying a standard unit, even if the "standard" soldier has a superior impression.
Just my opinion, not trying to offend anyone.

Here here, nice to have someone saying it. I went to beltring in 2003 and most of the units were waffen ss or generaderme!!!! (spelling sorry)

Why oh why do people like playing police other than being able to say "PAPERS BITTE!!!" I really do not know. I probably play the most marginalised and minority German group ever, a turkistan volunteer attached to the 452nd at Omaha.

From the Finnish Reenacting Unit - KevOs4

There are about 110 members in the KevOs4 mailing list, and about 30 active members that do reenactments and have the full gear. Repro uniforms for Finnish reenactors are hard to come by and there isn't a good manufacturer. Here are a couple of pix from our last "Winter" reenactment:

We also do shows around the country and did a huge Finnish Militaria show at Finn Fest 2005 in Michigan this past Summer. We will have a few tables at the Show of Shows in Louisville Kentucky this year also.

How do you guys handle the insignia issue doing a German unit in Germany. Are there any problems in that regard?

Vie Gehts! Marcus (aka Maartin Holz) of the 21st PZ out here in California. We fall under the Califorinia Historical Group. Currently I serve as a Krankentrager, but they call me "Sani". I may be switching over to being a funker in the future. I truly enjoy doing the support type roles because it gives me more of a chance to have one of those "moments" that we all strive for. Being a rifleman is fun, but it can get a bit old after a while.

I found this website while looking up a Luftwaffe badge. I may be doing a second impression as LW as I have friend with a replica Storche he takes to airshows and hopefully events in the future.

I am a American Civil War reenactor. I am a private in the 2nd Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry Regiment, Company F, also known as the "Belle City Rifles". The 2nd Wisconsin recieved more causualties in action than any other unit in the Civil War. I would love to be a WWI German reenactor someday.

Definitely the wrong door! Maybe even the wrong hallway in the wrong building! But, "it's all good!"
