The pre-auction bidding was getting a little high for a poster in that condition. Had it been an Anton Special, I dare say I would have pressed on...

Also, not sure if its of any interest but I found another period photo showing the SS Panzer poster - in Cherbourg. (albeit a partial shot of it).

Hell - what's it up to?

Cool - thanks for the photo !! At least 4 exist I know of......

I think I last bid 1500, but with levy etc... that would be like 1900... Then again I have no idea what these are worth, if they are rarer than I think then that may be a steal.... The standard Polizei ones I have seen for $500 - $700.

Not sure how many of the SS Polizei ones are about, although cannot be many.

It looks great in its present condition, so I will probably leave it as is and not risk the tape removal....

No fear, I always have the UV plexiglass and not glass.....not only is it much lighter, but it also avoids any possible mishaps such as the one you highlighted.
I am sure TonyS was thinking of a professional restorer tackling all that tape.
As one who used to successfully take old tape off rare books, I would not want to attempt such a job as your poster.
The paper is too thin, and the solvent like solutions used to loosen tape glue may damage the print and colors.
But also like TonyS described,I have seen what old fashioned tape will eventually do to all paper it is adhered to. It will literally make the paper vanish. Nothing left there but the tape.
So you might want to find a professional conservator on that project.

Oh I realise he meant it to be done by a professional, no way would I attempt to do that myself.

I will look into it soon as I was hoping to have them framed by late Jan - early Feb.

I did ask the seller why he had put the tape there and not try and have it linen backed to start with.

I appreciate the advice as I do want to make sure that all items I purchase are properly cared for.

Some idiot sealed the whole top edge on an Anton poster I have, the one with the big eagle done with gold leaf highlights, with white surgical tape.

The restorers were able to get that off without killing the poster.

Ordinary cello tape should be reasonably easy for them.

Without much trouble I found three of those SS Police posters by R. Seyfried - and it's not the same poster repeated three times (check the different fold lines). Can't be too rare.......

Another one - with a stamp between the boots.

Are any of those for sale, or just part of an archive collection?

Not currently for sale but who knows when they might be. What if they all came onto the market tomorrow? The Anton Zeppelin poster that was selling up to $4000 now sells around $2K to $2.5K.

I see that auction ended at $2750.00 + 22.5% buyers fee which is $3368.75 - over priced in my opinion especially in damaged condition and not linen backed which will add another $300 at least for restoration.

Mate I think your $1500 bid + buyers fee was about right

Your not wrong there, as soon as a few of the same item come on the market then prices should in theory be more competitive...

Yes it was overpriced, given the condition... although it is a nice poster, just not $3300+ nice!D

I have only ever seen this one as a postcard and without text so I am a more than a little suspicious of its originality.

                            Opinions appreciated.

Yes, I have seen alot more of the postcard version for sale than the poster.

The Poster is far more appealing IMO....

                              Thanks for the link.

                                Hi,

a great update - courtesy of the recent special issue of "Uniformes" magazine - including a lot of unseen flyers/booklets and posters for the Frenchs in the Waffen-SS !

More infos about the new special issue :

                                http://dev.wehrmacht-awards.com/foru...d.php?t=560998

Most of the new stuff are from the north of France area, under the operative command of the SS-Erzatzkommando Für Flandern Und Wallonien (see previous posts).

First, a flyer for "La division française de la Waffen-SS" (the french Waffen-SS division). This is the second known flyer for the north of France.
The flyer deals with the "terrorist bombings" by the Bomber Command and the 8e Air Force which started to heavily bomb the north of France in early 1944 with the preparation of the landing in France.

Then a very rare poster done again for the Werbestelle (recruitment centers) der Waffen-SS of Douai and Lille. You will find pictures used in other belgian Waffen-SS flyers, and other posters.

A picture of the Werbestelle der Waffen-SS of Lille. A near similar picture is on the previous poster too. We can notice the two french SS posters (the two soldiers, and the soldier with the worker), the "local motto" ("Les raids aériens crient vengeance ! Engagez-vous", "Air attacks shout for retaliation ! Join up").
The recruitment center was an annexe of the movie theatre "Cineac" which is visible on the right side of the picture. Today the movie theatre is a Tati store (www.tati.fr).

Now a few known booklets, but this time the pictures are a bit better IMO.

                                - "La SS t'appelle" booklet
Nice to see the rear cover, the same as the poster with the two Waffen-SS.

                                - "Unités françaises de la Waffen-SS" booklet

                                - Aux Armes pour l'Europe booklet
This is the text of Degrelle's speech at the Palais de Chaillot on March 5, 1944.

                                Pictures of the meeting :http://www.parisenimages.fr/fr/galer...art=0&count=10

A small sound extract here :
                                http://rutube.ru/tracks/3550457.html

The complete french text. Léon Degrelle made a speech of at least 1 hour.
                                http://www.histoireebook.com/index.p...-pour-l-Europe

                                - the small A4 french SS poster

To end this post, a nice and rare invitation to a propaganda event of the french SS "assault brigade"

The event on May 16, 1944 is the showing of two propaganda films, one about the SS-officers in Bad Tölz, the other about an SA Man. You can notice the "Brigade d'Assaut SS. "France" logo, and also the "Région Lorraine" unknown logo. But we can link the name of the unit with the SS poster that is showing the address of the Nancy Werbestelle der Waffen-SS (see below). Therefore, depending on the location, the name of the unit (brigade, division, etc) was different.
The movie theatre is the "Majestic", and i suspect that this is a movie theatre in Lorraine (there were a lot of "Majestic" movie theatres and hotels in France at that time). Maybe the one in Verdun (still in activity today) ?

                                See You

                                Vince
