There was a poster as per your pic, I had one a long time (10 to 15 yrs) ago which seemed fine to me. Not one you see very often.

I have seen numerous examples of the standard Polizei poster for sale, but never before the SS one until now.

I have at least seen the SS poster for sale 4-5 times over the years I have been collecting. I have never considered the design anyting but original. What I find more peculiar is how many of the "Police"-version of the poster that have been unearthed the last couple of years.

Was this laid on linen background and repaired? If you compare the two, the damages (mice-chewing?) is corresponding. Perhaps from the same roll.

It was a long time ago, I remember it being fragile but no repairs.

You know what, maybe it's the same one. I did some family portrait restorations professionally back then and I would have surely practised on a few images, this would have been a good candidate. I reckon it could easily be the same poster! Some marks are in the same places, either same poster of a few were damaged in a stack or something like that. I'll see if I can search for some more images of it.

They sure do, and its gained more rips in the 12 years since I took the picture.

...and still a great SS/Police propaganda image worth framing up to archival standards.

Just a thought, I don't know if people do this but how about getting some acid/lignen free paper or card in a colour close to the paper then get ph neutral watercolour paints and paint in the missing parts to perfectly match the poster on this background paper, then frame the poster on top of this paper, missing bits gone and done well would be hardly noticeable at full viewing distance.

I recently had some large size movies posters of the war film 'Ill met by moonlight' (about the capture of General Kreipe on Crete) framed and restored, I believe the guy did some touching up where there were poster joins and it looks fantastic.

Great idea btw.... although for these older pieces I would prefer to leave them in their natural state, although properly cared for and professionally framed.

I have a Dutch SS Poster and a 'Der Sieg Wird Unser Sein' poster by Elk, still to be framed, not sure on whether to get them linen backed or not.

Even if you have nothing else done, in my opinion you should get them linen backed. However, I would have all that tape removed from the back of the 'Der Sieg Wird Unser Sein'poster. The glue from that tape might leach through to the front.

I've seen a lot of posters where big chunks were missing or the poster was in a number of pieces and linen backing stopped them falling apart further, even though the missing pieces could not be filled in.

For framing I hope you are getting UV Plexiglass and not ordinary glass - I had a smashed frame where glass went through the poster doing quite a bit of damage. The seller would not take it out of the frame for shipping. It was an autographed Terminator poster with Arnie, Linda Hamilton, Michael Bien, James Cameron and a few other cast members. I was really pissed off....

That was my concern with the tape as well, although there is so much of it I fear that any attempt to remove the tape would destroy the poster!!!

It looks great in its present condition, so I will probably leave it as is and not risk the tape removal....

No fear, I always have the UV plexiglass and not glass.....not only is it much lighter, but it also avoids any possible mishaps such as the one you highlighted.

The pre-auction bidding was getting a little high for a poster in that condition. Had it been an Anton Special, I dare say I would have pressed on...

Also, not sure if its of any interest but I found another period photo showing the SS Panzer poster - in Cherbourg. (albeit a partial shot of it).
