Thank you so much for posting pics. I'm sorry what doesn't make sense? All the info I have or know came from my late mother. My grandfather after his military service became The captain of The Liberty boat. After his retirement they moved to Las Vegas and he would travel to San Diego to renew his captains license any tonnage any waters until late in his 70's. I also have his Chelsea Ships Bell clock serial #251583. I'm not sure what ship it came from. Is there a way to locate this info? I also failed to mention, the opposite side of the serial number on my binoculars under the plastic eye guard there is something engraved. I can't get the screw to open, I'm afraid of damaging. I noticed while pulling back on the rubber pieces before I knew how valuable they were. I'm now very curious. Thanks again to all that has helped and commented!!!!

One 8x60 has been added.. thank you. This is proceeding slowly, but it´s like a jigsaw Puzzle. Eventually, the motive is lined out.

We may allready have more than 10% of all cxn 8x60 ever made, in the list. The difference from the 7x50 may indicate the 8x60 never quite made it to the boats.

If the 8x60's didn't make it to the boat - wouldn't we see more of them?

I know Benjamin Disraeli said "There are three kinds of lies: lies, damned lies, and statistics." but a statistical analysis of the number of 8x60's made (250 reportedly) and when they were made, measured against the percentage of boats lost (in the same time frame) should give some indication of how many we'd expect to find.

By the way- how many 7x50's were made? Tying it in with the 8x60 seems risky as we'd expect only one cxn 8x60 per boat but several cxn 7x50's could be lost on one boat.

Finally - numbers aside - why would they make 8x60's and not issue them? They''re not very late war so it's seems reasonable to assume they were issued alongside blc 8x60's of the same period...

If they made one or two batches, say 100 each, or even 5 batches, each of 50.
Then all it takes to make half of those survive, would be one or two trains siderailed. But maybe I am too late into 1945 with this.
I think the survival rate of the 8x60, in general should be expected to be higher than the 7x50. Many of the earlier 7x50 must have gone down with the boats. Taking the box for sale on ebay into account, this may have been at a rate of up to ten pr. lost boat.
I don´t know if we have ever seen more than one 8x60 in use on a photo? If there were ever issued more than one on each boat. If we ever see a box for 10 8x60, then a planned general issue may be assumed. If no box ever existed, then the status of Kommandantenglas may be because the captains got one each, with the personal responsability to store it well in his cabin.
Sufficiently old captains have written memoires. Maybe a search on Ubootnet may reveal details on their issue. I believe some may have mentioned their "own" binocular. If for no other reason, then because of the weight.

To me it makes little sense that the best bino onboard was in the captains cabin. Maybe not a big issue once surface sailing diminished.
I have read several reports, where the boats dived after alarms from their radar detecting devices. Distrusted by the crews because they rarely, even in clear weather, had actual plane sightings to correspond with the warnings.
But their orders must have been: If a warning was sounded, you dive. Sighting or no sighting. The electronics were taking over part of the observation at this point. And a radar detecting device should be able to look "over the horizon" Something a binocular rarely can do.
