        Hi Terry,

I would love to help you, but ... these great optics aren't in my collection ( ), they belong to Behblc. I was just the medium inbetween ...

            U boat bins.

Boys oh this thread comes as a blast from the past.

The photos from taken by Buchiem I know - they are from his book "U Boat Kreig" one of a three volume series , only Volume one was translated and published in english "U-Boat War".

The set shown is unfortuantely not the rubber armoured model.
the standard leitz 7x50 (Shown) lacked the desicating cells and the body although light was rather porus and the set was vunerable to moisture ingression.
The Zeiss 7x50 model although a little heavier was a better set , attached a more recent photograph of the blc earlier shown. which is frequently seen in use.
The oter Zeis set likewise is frequently seen ( See "U-Boat War Patrol" by Lawerence Patterson).
The other two the blc 7x50 and fat 8x60.

                Hiya Lads,
Going back to patricks leitz 7 x 50. Here i think is a nice example as used by II Watch officer Herman Schrenk.

                cheers bill.

These are one of my few collecting bargins over the years, not cased and they have seen some use, but they still have good, clear optics.

                  Nice photo

Nice photo Bill , thanks for posting it.
The leitz set balances well in the hands , but it lacks some of the defination and light properties of Zeiss , which seem a little brighter.
Just my onw opinion , would I turn a good set of leitz down , no way !

                    fees due !

Went to post a photograph , fees due today .

The photo in this post and the one following are left and right of a centre spread photo double A4 size , too big to scan as one.
The leitz 7x50 on "Das Boot" U-96, the crew are using a mixture of blc smooth oculars and leitz 2tuna can."

The photo which made me want to own a set of UBoat bins.

From U-Boat war bought the book back in 1977.
the photograpgh which made me want to someday own a set of "U-Boat" bins.

I post it for this reason and the contrast which is evident between U-96 and this photo taken in 1944.

Great photos and thread. Although unintentionally, I have a number of binos as well--never intended to collect them. Interesting in the last photo--those look like Luftwaffe pattern swim vests rather than KM style.

And here's a nice pair of blc 7x50 smooth oculars from my collection!
I will try and post some more pics over the next week or so of others I have.
Can anyone show a picture of the beh rubber armoured bino's being used on a U-boat? Never seen them used by U-boat crews yet!

                            Cheers,

These style bino's were actually very commonly used by U-boat crews and numerous examples can be seen in contempory pics.

Another pair of blc 7x50 I just picked up! The colour looks washed out in the pics but is greener in real life.
