      Thanks !!! I've seen a number of Waterloo medals on
      display in museums while viewing their captured Eagles.
      Such medals, with name engraved edges, indeed make
      quite interesting historical militaria in that a soldiers war
      service record can be researched.

        OFW collection # 37

        After my 1996 auction lost eagle (post #33 ), I was further
        motivated onto new acquisitions, such as OFW #37 (post 33b),
        a "L N" or "N.III" version, but in fragment half state without box.
        An interesting study example of how repouss        é         work was done.

            Thanks for the interesting Imperial French eagle link.
            Sabretache, shabrack, gorget, & shako plate eagles are
            indeed very nice items. Wondering if Cottiau was also a
            2nd Empire flag eagle maker too?

              OFW, thank you (!) very much for the clear and very nice illustration, I've been searching for a illustration of the eagle in use to see where it would have been in wear, but was not able to find it until now. Very nice.
              I came across this eagle by accident on an site after typing "Eagle" in the search box and I was pleasently beaten by the detail of this 150 year (?) old eagle :-). I am not collecting this material at all but I must say I still get enthousiastic by it's display and by the nice displays in this topic :-).
              In the sellers accompanying text and photos I found the name of Cottiau which is also struck in the attachment pin on the back of this piece ... so I did some searching using this name Cottiau and found some pictures of a copy of a catalog dating 1863 ....
              Cottiau is named as being responsible for the "cuivrerie" ( translated copper ware / copper parts production factory ) since 1835. The catalog also shows numerous drawn / sketched impressions of tunic parts as different eagle emblem designs for different branches, belts, buckles, accessories etc., really nice !
              I've your interested in them I will gladly send you the pictures, if so please send me your email address via my p.m.box.
              I haven't searched any further as to what more, besides the accessories, Cottiau produced so I have to leave the thought / question about the Empire flag eagle making open ...

                          Another eagle "...I wouldn't mind having..." dates back to
                          a 1974 auction, where it sold for ~$2K USD. A Napoleonic
                          Model-1804 French Army Regiment example, which these
                          days goes for $100K+ Euros, as per this thread in post #1.

                            I once saw a National Guard Eagle in London at "Under Two Flags", a premier militeria antique with the flag in a frame. Charles Grant had owned it and it was sold to David Chandler.
                            Two Department eagles got singed in the fire at Hatfield House and the flags, which were faded and rotting anyway, were destroyed.
                            to my knowledge TWO Roman eagles have been recovered, both believed to be Auxillery standards. one is in the British Museum and was the basis of Rosemary Sutcliffes' book, "The Eagle Of The Ninth" and the other a IXth Legion Century Standard on an island off Dalmatia. @ 1980. It was in a museum in Sarajevo, but who knows now.

                              Sutcliffe novel inspiration superb Silchester Roman eagle in the
                              Reading UK Museum, and will enjoy finding out more about your
                              cited Dalmatia Roman Standard.

                                I heard this from an old Prof of mine, M. jones, in 1985. Apparently they had dug up remnants of a IXth legion garrison on the coast (AFTER the IXth left Britain) and found a similar eagle to the Silchester one. He said an article was in the offing, but I know no more than that...and then came the Balkan war.

                                Have you ever readthe old Napoleonic Flags and standards book? It has great info, second generation stuff, but explains whySir Walter Scott had the 105th Regt. Flag.
