Here is an Alteste another member gave me. Put real insignia on it and how many would be fooled? This one is late 50's early 60's.

The point is, good fakes existed years ago. Maybe not great fakes but not fuzzy wool fuzzy piping types.

As good as the Altestes were for their era, the triple serial # fakes are light years ahead of them...and date from the same era.

I think the first Waffen SS officer visor cap is kinda easy, the visor gives it away ( to me it looks like the plastic visors used in West German visor caps), the second (Waffen SS general cap) is truly extremely hard to tell that it is a fake.

Nick can we see more pictures of the interior (behind the sweat band shot)?

Alteste pre dates these....the good Lt. Col. we all know and hate sold lots of these years after the Alteste were in place (in collections). Heck, some even had the round inked acceptance stamps so the buyer 'knew' they were real!! After all, they were stamped!

I think that this 'run' of leather was a 70's through early 80's
