Glenn,
I don't know if you actually have the hat in hand. But I would appreciate your observations when you get it. They really are beautifully constructed. Thats why its difficult for any of us who own one to believe they might be fake.
I respect Mr Singers opinion and he might be right, that we've all been sucked in by the biggest hoax I've heard of. If you look through the thread there are several accounts of direct or indirect vet connections etc. The people making the statements aren't connected in any way. This would have to be the best executed frauds in our hobbies history.
If these are definately determined to be fake one day; I'm keeping my hat as an example of the almost "Perfect Fake". The perfect fakes would be the numerous EM M43s they most certainly produced, that are now "textbook" examples. WR Jim

Don't have it yet Jim,probably in a week or so.
I certainly respect Mr Singers opinion as well but the direct/indirect Veteran purchases certainly weigh in it's favor. The crown piping is the only thing that really concerns me,but could be the fact that these hat's were foreign made and could have very well been found "en masse" at a factory..(it has happened before)
I don't know why we are seeing these hats in various places for sale (this is the third or fourth I have seen in the last year, but I liked this one the best) but could be the fact that some collectors who own these know that there a shadow of doubt surrounding them, they are getting nervous and selling them off.
I have seen the same thing happen with W-SS gaberdine hats some of which of course are original.
Alway's nice to have an item though that the entire collector community will agree is the real thing, I do certainly believe that these hats in particular are original WW2 manufacture.

I too RESPECT Mr Singers enormous knowledge..
But also concur this would be one of the best pull the wool over collectors eyes ever accomplished... That was an excellent way or putting it by the way..Billbert
If you go back thru the thread I mentioned I had the same exact maker in HBT with the funky piping and same color green buttons with a machine sewn bevo flatwire T trap..25 plus years ago..well worn and salty back then..But in someone elses collection out there today..Billbert

The view from an island can be very nice, but sometimes lonely. I respect you for sticking to your guns. Its been a very interesting and civil discussion.
I admit that there are more stories associated with this hat then I've ever encountered in my collecting lifetime. I think we have quite a few of them on this thread spanning several decades. If nothing else it makes for a good discussion.
