There was no fake small GPB in the grouping, at least not at the time Barry Turk sold the grouping on Emedals for 13,900.00.

There was also no DK or Wehrmacht breast eagle either.

    UPDATE on Fritz Eitel:

After a bit of research, it was discovered that Fritz Eitel had been a member of the SS, a Gau level Redner (Speaker), an Engineer, and Mayor of Mainz-Ginsheim from 1933-1939.

In July of 1932 Fritz Eitel was severely wounded while on propaganda duty at a train station by 200 Communists. Even though the Party was extremely low on funds due to the 1932 elections, Martin Bormann personally allocated NSDAP HilfKasse so Fritz could have the multiple surgeries needed for his nearly fatal wounds. The wounds had been to his eye, face and torso. This explains why Fritz could not have attended the 1932 Coburg reunion and only received his Coburg Badge in 1933 at the second reunion in Coburg and attended by other members who could not travel to the 1932 event. This also explains why Fritz only received the BO 2nd pattern and not 1st pattern, he was not in the Putsch of 1923.

For some reason Fritz requested replacement for both sizes of GBP a total of 4 times, the last being in 1943. Fritz was a avid fisherman too, responsible for setting up a fishing area for his community in 1938.

Fritz was a true "Old Fighter" with Hitler practically from the beginning of the Movement.
IMO Fritz's career never truly rebounded from the 1932 attack and from that point onward, Fritz only played a minor roll in the NSDAP history. It is unknown when Fritz passed away or if he survived the war. At the 1938 Coburg Reunion, Fritz received a special Honor Pokal for his role in the battle and loyalty to the Party. This Pokal was put up for auction several years ago, but the reserve was not met and the Pokal was not sold.

In the early days, Fritz was somewhat of a hot head and he made local news in 1931 by this reactionary stunt:

In connection with the withdrawal of French occupation troops on 30 June 1930 in Mainz was an initiative to build a memorial for the former Foreign Minister Gustav Stresemann, whose understanding and reconciliation policy Mainz owed the premature end of the occupation. Despite difficult financing could be done in 1931, the inauguration of the monument. It consisted of a 24 meter wide and 9 meters deep system whose central part reached a height of 7.5 meters. Inside stood a bust Stresemann and turned in front of the middle part, the Rhine, almost 5 meters high imperial eagle.
The inauguration took place in the presence of Reichsau-ßenministers Curtius, the widow and the sons Stresemann and numerous public figures. Despite extensive security measures occurred during the ceremony to an incident when the SS man Fritz Eitel rushed suddenly to the microphone and called out, "Germany awake!"
After the "seizure of power" there were rumors that spoke of a termination of the memorial by the Nazis quickly. This had attempted to denigrate even before the "seizure of power" Stresemann as "fulfillment politicians". Although demolition plans were initially denied by officials, joined the new rulers in 1933 the monument to the public. In the years 1936-1938 took place then the complete demolition of the memorial.

Many thanks, SMV, for this comprehensive biography of Fritz Eitel's record with the NSDAP -- just the kind of history I love to read! I did notice that my records do not show him as belonging to the SS, as recorded in the DALs, but this may be because he was either never promoted into the officer's ranks or that he became a lower officer after 1938, when the DALs only recorded certain of those ranks due to the influx of Waffen-SS members.

Oh yes, on 1/16/16 there was a fake GPB in the grouping. But Barry was quick to remove it when notified. So it's still out there, if he didn't trash it.

And yes, that's what I said about the DK and eagle as well.

          Hi Br. James,

          Thank you for your interest.

I don't know why Fritz is not listed in SS records other than he was an early SS member (at least as early as 1931) and he had not risen above the EM ranks. By 1933 Fritz is donning a SA uniform, so he was apparently dismissed from the SS due to his injuries and or disabilities from the July 1931 Communist attack.

I first found the reference to his SS membership from an online article about the Gustav Stresemann Memorial. I thought it may have been a typo from a period newspaper write-up about the event. However, when I received his NSDAP Partei Korrespondence files (85 pages!) his membership in the SS was verified. I forgot to mention that he was also wounded in the foot as well, another reason for Himmler to boot him out of the SS.

I stand corrected. A real shame when folks take an interesting grouping that stands fine on it's own, and then spice it up just to increase the price, with a fake no less.
I guess that the new owner had to justify the new price increase and felt the need to add the eagle and DK.... they fit into the grouping so well don't they.

            Thanks,
            Marcus

              Hi Marcus,

Thanks very much for your thoughtful response. Since Eitel was "severely wounded" during an altercation with the local Communists in mid-1932, that would probably be cause for his being released from the SS...though being injured 'in the line of duty' and then being dismissed for being unqualified for SS membership because of those very injuries does seen a bit outrageous; I would have supposed that the least Himmler could have done would have been to transfer him to 'honorary status!' And if Eitel had never been promoted to officer's rank by 1932, that would be the reason why he did not appear in the DALs -- the first annual edition which contained an index was that of 1935, which would have been long after Eitel left the SS and went to the SA.

              Thanks again,

              Br. James

I am pretty sure it started out in Germany. And I am not referring to the early 1930s, but 2013.

Just a side issue: will all Coburg badges touched by Hitler before?

Congratulations Greg! I've liked your badge from the first time I saw it a few years back. Interesting idea that the recipient had with that unusual attachment design. Now I know of at least two Coburg Badges residing in Tejas. ; )

Chen, I doubt Hitler handled every first pattern CB ever awarded. Hitler was extremely busy during the years 1932-34 with elections and setting up the new government. If only around 250 were awarded on October 15, 1932, that's only a little over half of the total first patterns that Hitler COULD have personally handed out. It is not known if AH attended the second reunion in 1933, but it is doubtful IMO. It would be neat if he had though!
