Colorizing photos

As you say portraits are very difficult to colorize because of the face.
If I can give you an advice Matteus, you have to use more than one color in the face in order to achieve a more realistic looking. I have spend a few minutes on the las portrait you posted and you can see that using a color for the face and a different one for nose, chin and ears improve the colorized picture.

yes i do like this effect for eg the cheeks, but couldnt confirm these things on real life photos of that era (eg Hugo Jaeger, Walter Frentz).
with an exception on photos taken inside, where it seemed to be very hot, but never saw this on photos taken outside?

OK now i am getting nit picky.
I was looking at the pic and i thought the hair colour is just a little artificial for my liking. So I changed that as well.

From collecting original color photos for so many years, I do have a feeling for what is right and automatically wrong in my eye.

Close up portrait photos are hard to colorize. Skin tones vary depending on such factors as complexion, light source and clarity of the photo itself. A face can change color depending on whether it is in light or shade.

I look at where the light source is coming from. If from the side for instance, the side in light is a different to the side in shadow.

I also apply this principle when coloring outdoors photos.

Flesh tones are hard to master and it takes a subtle mixture of several colors to get the right effect.

Areas such as lips, cheeks, around eyes, mouth and even ears can have extra color added to make them stand out.

I try not to oversaturate the colors but it's still hard to get a good balance at times.

I applaud all the people who have contributed their work to this thread, long may it continue.
