      Thanks for joining this thread and for your comments. I want to concentrate on the GI view of knocking out German Armor, trains, artillery, equipment in this thread. I also have alot of Allied Armor...mostly Shermans adn Tank Destroyers...which I will post in a different thread later on. Bill

                      Le Désert I./Pz.-Rgt. 6 Panthers

                      Mr. Andrew Hall, you have the eyes of an eagle! Upon closer examination of Bill’s Panther in photo #67 it is in fact "Ursula." Left stowage bin missing, cleaning rod tube hanging from the side, good catch! I have several photos of "Ursula" taken from different angles and a shot of her fallen crewmen which appear to have been moved from the rear deck of the tank to the patch of woods on the right of Bill’s photo. The tank I mentioned in my email to Bill is actually "Elna" which was KO’d right behind and following "Ursula." I also have several other shots of "Elna" and a nice photo of this Panther appears on page 200 of Belton Y. Cooper’s book DEATH TRAPS.

                      According to my researches these Panthers were ambushed from the flank by M-10 Tank Destroyers of 3<SUP>rd</SUP> Platoon, Company A, 899<SUP>th</SUP> Tank Destroyer Battalion.

                      Also I might share that Panther 421 (Bill’s photo #73) is believed to have been assigned to I./Panzer-Regiment 15. I have a photo of this Panther captioned "Near Regensburg Germany." My photo shows this Panther after salvage work had begun on it. BTW it was a "steel wheel" Panther.

                      Thanks to Bill for starting this thread and for sharing his great photographs!

                        Thanks for lending/sharing your photos on this thread. I especially want to thank you for providing all the details surrounding some of the Panzers. Nothing like knowing what took place and what caused the destruction of these behemoths. I wonder how many GI's took photos of these very same Panthers...it must be in the Dozens!! My Dad told me that he and his buddies were scared ****less whenever they heard German Armor heading in their direction...the earth shaking as they got closer!!

                        My next thread will be covering Allied Armor...mostly Shermans, TD's, Halftracks, etc including German POW's

                        If anyone has photos of Knocked out/captured German Panzers, Vehicles, Flak & Artillery and Railway guns in their collection...Please feel free to post them on this thread and if you don't have the means send them to me via email and I will post them for you.

                        Here are some more of Mike's photos. Knocked out vehicles in the Rhineland around 16 Aug 1945....much equipment was still lying around months and years after the end of the War.

                              Mr. Pruett, thanks for the praise which is very welcome from someone of your standing. 'Ursula' had some distingishing features as you mention above, additional ones being she has her extended fender set stowed, a ladder on the side, a binocular style rainguard over a monocular gun sight and a spare jerry can rack over the rear RHS air intake. She also has had her rear RHS exhaust broken off but sometime before she was knocked out as evidenced by the staining.

                              There's a very good repro of a side photo of Ursula in the Japanese 'Panther and Tiger Tanks' published by Sunday Art Magazine showing she had a '1' painted on the second set of spare tracks on the LHS of the turret. Evidence of the upper part of a '1' on the rear of the turret in a shot published in Lefevres Panzers In Normandy Then & Now and the lower part of the '1' in a rather more horrific shot of one of the charred crew members (this latter one's published in Marko Bandos Breakout at Normandy). My good friend Barry Crook and I were wondering if Mr.Petz's shot shows a full number?

                              Something that brings me nicely on to the other Panther 'Elna' you mention is 'Ursula' also has a wooden pole 'fixed' (I assume semi-permanently) across the glacis. This is one of those instances where posting a picture would save a thousand words but as I'm not sure how to do this here and as I don't have Coopers Death Traps words will have to suffice!

                              In his several 'ID'ing Normandy Panthers' posts on Missing Links Barry Crook put a particular photo in the LSSAH section but said at the time though this may be a Cobra loss he wasn't positive. I mentioned to him off-forum that this machine had a pole across the glacis just like 'Ursula' and also maybe had a trace of a name on the gun travel lock so may well be a Lehr machine but we were never sure.

                              This Panther is an early un-zimmerited 'A' and has an unusual spare wheel mount over the LHS rear air intake. The cupola AA ring is also missing. From memory (I'm at work) the photo is in Bando's Breakout book and a rear view with two kneeling GI's appears in Reardons Victory At Mortain (hence Barrys inclusion in an LSSAH post). I was wondering if you could confirm or otherwise if this machine is 'Elna'?

                                I'm sure you know already but this Panther looks to be the one in Sainteny (p.135 Panzers In Normandy T&N).
