Well spotted!
Can't help thinking that the M44 he's wearing might be a re-issue at the very end of the war (rather than worn in the Courland pocket itself), as it looks a little too clean to have been in that Hell-hole for several months, and I wonder if M44's ever made it into Courland through the minimalist supply chain in the first place?
Could be one of the few (wounded, sick etc) evacuees back to Germany before the surrender? Of course we'll never know!
