    Hi Gerdan,

That's what I thought as well. We'll have to see the photo to confirm. Sad that sense a brave flyer had to die in a senseless accident, rather than at the hands of an equally gifted fighter pilot.

Can someone help with this Unteroffizier function?
                    Looks like Uffz. I. W. ??
This soldier went to Heereswaffenmeisterschule II.
So the function is in that direction.

I'm collecting anything related to the towns Castricum and Bakkum during WWII.
Also soldbucher from 116pzdiv. And 1944-1945 eastfront pockets, kampfgruppe and Oder front.

There was also a German airfeld near Seschtschinskaja and also today is a Russian airfield:

                      Seschtschinskaja (e. Seshchinskaya) - C Russia (42 km SE of Roslavl’); Fliegerhorst/Airfield
                      Nearest village: Krasnopol’ye

                      Coordinates:
                      053º 43’ 01” N
                      033º 21’ 18” E

"i. W." should be "im Waffendienst"

                          This I found additional:

The rank affix "i.W." means "im Waffendienst".

What is known are the so-called Waffen-Feldwebel who did wear a badge of crossed rifles. It is for small arms mainly.

                            Here the German text:

                            "Liebes Fräulein Anni,
zum Weihnachtsfeste sende ich Ihnen meine herzlichsten Wünsche für ein segensreiches Fest und meine besten Grüße,
                            Ihr Frau Diehm"

It is an ordinary Christmas card with the normal wishes for Christmas.
