John, I do observe a distinct feature on this style (based initially on the backing) of eagle that I don't see on other smock eagles.

Here is a variation of the Grünmeliert eagle I have only encountered (to date) on late water pattern smocks manufactured by Dietzel.

What makes this variation different than the earlier splinter printed over GM is the unique thread pattern in darker colors. Also, I have never seen these with the "rain" pattern or green camo printed on them, only the brown camo pattern.

Anyone else have some thoughts on these?

              Willi,
A question: I have seen several Dietzel smocks and they all seemed to have their eagles stitched on in a very heavy fashion . Have you noticed this , or am I way off ?
Are you sure the eagle above comes from a Dietzel smock ?

              Regards,
              Steve

Steve, the eagle on my Dietzel is sewn loosely, just as the one Willi posted.

Yes Willi, and the synthetic grey backed eagles are the same.

John, are those from the same kind of smocks as used in 1940.... ?
If not, how did the Breast Eagle on a jumpsmock as used in 1940 look like. If its has been already posted then please give me the URL of the photo...

No Pietje, these eagles are from late war smocks, usually 44 dated. Please look at the eagles on page 13 of this thread to see several examples of early eagles. Here is one of them, a typical 40 eagle. Early eagles are backed on the GM fabric that this smock is made from.

                        Willi,
What if the darker colours are merely due to a weak over-print in green camo ? Look at a "splinter over olive" smock to see how the green splinter changes the colour of the individual threads of the GM material when viewed under magnification. Just a thought.

                        Regards,
                        Steve

P.S. John, thanks for the info !

Steve, it is a darker camo green. I could demonstrate this on several eagles.

I hope Gerard doesn't mind but here is one of the eagles on one of the superb ground division jackets he just acquired.

And, a few weeks ago another couple of jackets were discovered locally. Here is one of the eagles.
