Reverse. The strap was carried home from Cassino by a New Zealand soldier.

Still two days, and cassino will bombed with a carpet of thousand of tons bombs. I will show you how it was Cassino before its total destruction, in memory of a city that was neither more beautiful and not more ugly of many Italian cities ... but was Cassino not there anymore.

Hotel des Roses on the left. This name is not really correct. The big building was not a Hotel, but the house of the reach family called "De Rosa" (typical name of many families of Cassino), but the soldiers has a wrong translation of the name and "De Rosa" become "Des Roses".

This was the cable-car (I don't know if this is correct translation in english) that went from the train station until the Abbey of Montecassino. The wire was cut by a German plane (a Me-109) in November 1943. The plane then crashed near the railway station and remained there until the end of the battle of Cassino. The cable-way was not rebuilt after the war. The tower that was on the Hangman Hill gave this nickname to the hill.

A little "Then & Now" of the cable-way station. It is not perfect, I Know...but is impossible to take the same shot today...and I don't have an helicopter!
