Excellent display. Ive never seen a pic of an m38 painted with the splinter pattern like in the pic above. Was this really done?

Great helmets, I never grow tired of seeing these again

I'm pretty sure it's from Karl V's second volume, on helmets.

Lots of named helmets, if only we had the FJR6 roster, to match them to Komps.

Yes, of was done. There are a couple (perhaps 3) in collections. I first saw one at the Max Show in 1996, bit not sure who bought it.

Unlikely he had it camoed when he joined FJR6, unlike von der Heydte, who wore the standard camo type.

But, it does point out that it is rather likely other "seasoned" FJs wore camos from previous unit assignments.

                  Nice photos David.
                  Willi,
VdH's helmet is at Utah Beach Museum with his jacket. Helmet was painted in dark green but under it, we can see traces of yellow sand paint.

Ysto, I would be skeptical of such items. How would they get his items? Especially his helmet?

Here is VdH helmet in the museum. It doesn't look like the FJ Regiment 6 camo he is wearing in the pics. If it is his helmet then possibly repainted after Normandy.

                            VdH items

VdH donated his personal effects to the museum during his lifetime.

This is a better, clearer pic of his sawdust camo helmet in June 44, would be interesting to know what the provenance of the one in the museum is

Another angle, with various items ( not VdH items it seems) .
Thanks Ysto. Perhaps the m38 is one of his but from his service before Normandy, and one that had been left at home.

I wonder if the one he had in Normandy was later worn by him when he was captured in the Ardennes, I can imagine it making a good souvenir for a GI ! That Bulge helmet in other photos doesn't have the sawdust look to it though, but may have been repainted yet again, or just be a different helmet entirely. With resources scarce they will have kept hold of and re used whatever they could.
