Did this visit to the bank vault result in the photo that has been used in reference books (of just the awards in their box), or do you know if that one was taken some other time?
No, I dont think the photos in the reference books were taken by my friend.

My friend said that he was able to handle Rudel's awards, but he never took any good photos of the awards themselves.

Remember that most cameras that were availible during the time of the visit didn't have nice macro photo capabilities like most digital camera's (and many cell phones) of today.

Thanks again. What a memorable experience to have met these people!

(And even with a digital camera today, my photos aren't as good as your friend's.)

He met numerous RK recipients in their homes and corresponded with many more.

Although Rudel is not smiling in the photo, it was his idea to take my friend to the bank vault. I have seen more photos from this visit that include Rudel, his wife, etc.

Thanks Calvin for the clarification. I made a mistake by saying it was taken by Bill Stump. Sorry

          Regards,

                  My Meeting with Rudel

Hello All, I met Rudel in the mid 70's at his home in Kuftstein. At that time his medals were at his house. He let me examine them (Play with them) all I wanted . As far as I know that was the only Knights Cross he had. Well worn as it was, I'm sure it meant alot to him as it was the one he wore through out the war. I met him again in 1977 in Chicago while he was on a trip to visit an old friend. The old friend was Otto Skorzeny's driver. He was a true gentleman and treated me like one of the family and those memories mean the world to me. Thanks for posting these photos & info for us, Tom

Is the badge in Post 40 supposed to be the same badge as in Rudel's storage box? Same badge, strange angle?
