And some beret and cap badges, all original.

On the first row, the two gold ones are different sizes and have pins on the back. The silver one is very rare and the attaches are french style. VNMC, early model.

On the bottom, the Air Force is for the cap whereas the army is also made with pins.
Is the last one enlisted VNAF?? It has a savety pin.

Alex, here is my BDQ helmet. It is for a corpsman.
I believe it is a real one.

It comes from someone I usually trust and does not look like the copies made the last years. I bought it in 2002 in SGN.

          Hi Alex,

here is an example that was offered for sale in March 2007.

I think it has a very good chance of being an original example.

I saved the photos just in case it ever pops up for sale again!

Paint patina....it has been on the shell for a while.

I do concede that i would not be able to differenciate between 35 years of age and 20 years though...

one of the hardest items to authenticate i think.

I still like this one though. I wonder where it now resides?

                Hi Jeff,

Yeah, you caught me, I had to google search that one

Not to go off the current subject, but was there supposed to be any difference in the color of green berets worn by the VNMC vs. the LLDB?

Techincally speaking, that is. If there was, it probably didn't mean much to the soldiers or tailors. But just something I was wondering.

Erich the colors of those units and the colors of other units berets will vary by shade. Remember that these items were not all made at the same place and by the same owner of the raw materials that go into them. I have seen the color of airborne berets vary greatly as well as others. The Vietnamese tailors for the most part did not have access to good quality dyes, or they did not want to pay for them. Being in a tropical climate did not help either, the intense sun tended to fade cloth rapidly. That is why you see so many nam made cloth badges like CIB's and wings that look almost white in color. The poor dyes used to color the khaki material faded rapidly, much faster than the uniform did. So yes you will find different shades between these units, but to my knowledge there was not an official difference in color.
NTS, I like you early cap and beret badges that you showed, any possibility of seeing the backs?
Patrick, From what I can tell by your photos that BDQ helmet looks pretty convincing. Of course I would need a hands on to be positive it has the right attributes of an original. I have been picking these up for awile now and most of the fakes that I come across are pretty easy to differentiate. Jeff

Jeff, no problem except that you will have to wait a few months (next time I go back to France!).

                        Hi Alex,

it was offered for sale by Scott Kraska and sold in a matter of hours after it was listed on his site.

I have a strong feeling it was $600, but i cannot swear to that. I was more interested in seeing what appears to be a good original at the time.

what are the points to look at to make the difference between fake and original.

You can PM me if you dont want to mention it on the open forum.

                          thanks

there is no problem to get the helmet the way its shown on the foto, as you will know the german helmet fakers are very good, there are mutiple ways to get a patina to it and rust on the surface ect...

the German helmet collecting scene is becoming a science for itself. especially the Normandie camo stuff, i just cant follow it anymore.

I really like NTS helmet, it really has the same camo as vietnam ERDL shirts.

Jeff my favorite beret at the moment is your rural hamlet program beret.

                            Cheers
