Tread softly in acquiring vn war local made patches, these are being produced by the bushel in ho chi minh city, maybe even by the same people that made the originals in some cases. They've been known to buy ref. books on the patches and than make fakes. I understand some of the fakes are exc. some are total fantasy.

Here's a link to a dealer who's got a good reputation and was recommended to me as being legit, I just found I couldn't afford to pay what the real stuff is going for. He's got an exc. section about vn repros on his site as well with pics.

          Hi Alex,

I would run screaming to the hills before i even considered buying off that linked ebay seller...

          Avoid like the plague.

What aspect of S.Vietnamese/Cambodian are you interested in?

          ARVN Airborne, ARVN Ranger,Marines,infantry etc..?

You can spend your collecting life building a collection from printed S.Vietnamese insignia alone, it is a vast field and quite fascinating.

Cambodian uniforms are near impossible to find, i have one Cambodian made set of uniform items, and one jacket that was used by Cambodian Para Commandos just before the collapse, it isn't however a Cambodian item(!).

Cambodian insignia is arguably the most attractive insignia produced during the war in my humble opinion, and is very underated.

Here is a display for an ARVN Paratrooper.

          Drop me a PM.

          Patrick.

PS. Forgot to metion that Bob Chatt is one of the best militaria dealers around ( Lee Jackson is also highly recommended for original items too).

                        Hy

to all, sorry for the late reply was busy on the week end, first of all i wanted to say that my interest for the south vietnamese army came during my 5 years that i spent there 12 years ago, i know the military market in saigon pretty well and i know that fakes are plenty there, i went to the states and people told me that the better stuff was over there (USA).

nice stuff that you have Patrick,

personaly i m more into complete uniforms.

I m not really sure what i want to start to collect, because of the lack of real good books about uniforms, but i m interested first at watching the dealer site to get a price range figure of the stuff being offered.

I think that collecting the Vietnam war is very underated by collectors but i think it might jump in the next couple of years.

To be honest i personaly prefer the NVA troops, maybe because i have been indoctrinated to long in Vietnam over 5 the years that i spent there
but i think collecting both sides makes it more intersting.

Cambodian army is intersing to me as welll, i have heard that it s almost impossible to find stuff.

by the way i think that they might be ware houses full of South Vn stuff in VN under the control of the actual Goverment.
i have talked to some of the guys at the military market in saigon 10 years ago and he says it s impossible to get the contacts, somtimes some pieces make it out sold by an Officer, but it s drop by drop.
But of course this is all second hand stories and gossip talk, who knows where all the stuff ended after the war.

                        Cheers

                          HI Alex,
Here in the US, VN has become very popular to collect, but the relative small quantities of everything involved (in comparison to WW2 with millions and millions of soldiers involved). Makes it very hard to find good stuff.

The vietnamese have been making fake french indochina enamle badges for a number of years, an area I used to collect, and these are extremely high quality fakes. The local made patches, are easy because they're so crude that they're faked rather readily there. my dad spent two years in VN and I've always wanted to go but have yet to make it there! I envy you your experiences!

                            Hy Chris

yes i know that the French badges are hugely faked, wespecialy the localy made ones.

Vn is a great places, no anger from the Vietnamese towards the US, actualy they love americans much more then the french, the colonial occupation was much more pain then the war for reunification of the country.

But for Vnese this is all past now.

I have met Vnese people collecting south Vnese stuuf in saigon, it a very low key collecting world, as you can imagine.

north Vnese stuff can be found prety easily, but the early north Vnese stuff like the Ratan helmet and early Mao still uniform is so difficult to find, i actually have only seen one in the museum there.

i heard that mayn US soldiers brought backsouth Vnese uniform parts like camo shirt or trousers is that right?
I guess that they might a gone to a tailor to fit that into their size.

But thanks for all the infos i got on this subject.

                            Cheers

it was on the rack with the childrens Halloween costumes

it was stamped A S = asian small
