        Michael,

Thanks for the pics of your West German police helmet. A very nice example of the single bolt mounting type. Are there any DIN markings in your helmet?

        Regards,

        Gordon

Michael - Adverse intent was not my intention. I was merely trying to imply that economic forces were also at work in the West and may have influenced helmet selection to a greater extent than previously considered.

          I apologize for any misunderstanding.

          Sincerely,
          T.J. Cullinane

Regardles, I came across this thread and thought I might add one example I have in my collection. I don't collect helmets or headgear per say, but as part of what I do collect, have occasion to have some helmet or headgear examples.

I primarily focus on East German military memorabilia, but due to military assignments during the Cold War in West Berlin, acquire when possible as part of what I collect, memorabilia associated with East and West Berlin. My military occupation in West Berlin was such that I worked closely with the West Berlin Police and a West Berlin Police KRIPO colleague gave this West Berlin Police Helmet to me.

            T.J. CULLINANE,

No apology necessary or required. I made a point of emphasizing that there was "No Adverse" intent. I understood your post. I merely wanted to make a correction to insure other readers did not misunderstand.

            All the best,

            Gordan,

Where on or in the helmet would I look for a DIN number? I'm pretty confident all that I observed and photographed was all that there was. I don't really know much about Polizei stuff - even though at one time I worked very closely (and covertly) with these guys.

              Michael,

If there is a DIN number it would be on the inside of the skirt above the chin strap. I don't have any helmets with me to send you a photo of the location. An example of the stamp would be DIN 14 940. This particular DIN number covers the specifications for a "Feuerschutzhelm". These markings don't appear on all helmets.

              Gordon

                Gordon,

The only other marking I could find was an ink stamped rectangular box on the inside of the liner in which appeared "RR Berlin GB".

                That I'm afraid, is it.

                  Michael,

Thanks for loking. Is it possible that the RR is PP for Polizei Prezidium? I have a hat marked PP Berlin GB.

                  Regards,

                      Joe,

Thanks for posting the picture of the stamp in your helmet. My hat is marked the same way. It is also unit marked in pen to 3/POL. BAT 20 for 3rd Company Police Battalion 20. There is a good chance that all of the helmets marked to PP BERLIN GB came from the same battalion.

                      Regards,

                      Gordon

Just out of interest what would a helmet, as featured in post #5, fetch in todays market?

                        Comment

Recently bought this Westberlin Bereitschaftspolizei M53 helmet as BGS but received Bepo helmet instead (helmet in photo looked green), so I will be selling it because I no longer collect Polizei (only keeping my Berlin Schupo uniform). I thought I would post photos of it here for reference.

The history of these helmets and their use was already mentioned earlier. I am not aware of any use with Schutzpolizei. The blue uniforms were adopted in 1956 (before Berlin Polizei wore green), so blue helmets can be dated to late 1950s-1970s. In comparison to my WW2 Heer M40, it has shorter visor.

                          regards
                          Klaus

Two of these helmets in action with Berlin Bepo, 1963. This photo is in several places on internet but I think it is scan from book or magazine.

Liner, marked "57-61" and with P.P. Berlin property stamp. In thread about breeches, it was suggested GB means Großberlin, property of Polizei within all Westberlin and not particular station.

Liner in very good condition. Foam pad is very uncomfortable.

Finally, maker stamp in shell ("LS 66"). Another Linnemann und Schnetzer helmet, rarer 66 shell size.

                                West German M60 - M62 shell sizes?

did they make different shell sizes? or were all same shell size with different sized liners?

on German M60 and the M62 shells
