Steve, yours is very interesting. I tend to believe '42 dated canteens with webbing and olive colored cups are true tropicals, as they pre-date the late-war styles more commonly encountered with webbing.
Here is an all matching "FWBN42" for comparison.Willi

Just to keep this wonderful thread alive I'd like to show you my latest purchase.
A nice salty tropical one, with superb markings on the web straps.
The body is marked HRE42,both strap endings LUX marked,the hook HRE41,the head is marked HRE43,and you in the webbed straps it is an A inside a C and 42,and also K.u.B.42.
What are those markings?Different manufactures and different years?Shouldn't a canteen be marked with the same year production?
