Thanks, Felix, for your work and I agree, determination of the originality cannot be based solely on the color of a backing support material. We see it on original Heer, KM, LW examples in probably in all possibale colors all the time: tan, white, green, blue, etc, sometimes even multicolor material, or no backing material at all. No doubt it was done the same way with SS bullion insignia.

Taking in consideration the "vertousity" of fakers nowadays, I feel we should take a much "closer" look when dealing with bullion insignia - maybe we need to study and compare the bullion, unterlagen, threads and all material used itself, find out how all original used on bullion insignia looks under extreme magnifacation, something like on the picture below.. I don't know if fakers have already created and use an identical bullion and unterlagen to what it was used pre 1945? Obviously, comparing quality of kraftmanship and shape, blacklighting it or burning-testing it - is not enough, good fakes can pass it all these tests, so my guess would be to learn original material in very little details and know how it should look because I would think it would be probably impossible for fakers to make the very exact match of the bullion wire twist, width, etc.

Why not rolls of original bullion still exist...its wheter or not the eagle has a cardbord unterlagen if not I would dismiss it . Now i have seen lots and lots of original SS officer eagles over the years and have yet to see a well worn original with a white backing in fact all have had black backings .

I am perfectly content with this tunic removed eagle, which has a white backing.

The one you posted is finely detailed and is a far cry from the thing that started this thread...

Also Bob that is white cloth which is quite different than the backing on the top one...people are compairing apples and oranges here..the one at the top has a more solid white backing sewn to it which to me is very suspect..yours is like a cheese cloth and was frequently used on original insignias.

                        You are not correct.
This is the same style of eagle with a minor variation of the inner wing fether half moons. It has the same details and traits. The difference is in the lighting of the photos which can be very decieving.

Bob's eagle is a nice example of what I try to tell is a legit original style of eagle, and a nice one. It also uniform removed and hence have some wear.

I also think that you Jpic, which has good good knowledge, gets too hooked up on a white backing, which I have illustrated can vary a lot. Also the size of photos play a role. of course a larger photo will show coarser weave.

It is hard to believe that insignias can be found in mint condition, but they sometimes are, and they fool a lot of collectors.

would this "lovely" backing be "very suspect" too?

The one that started this thread appears to be a very poor copy IMO and I would not own it.. Look at it this way, that leaves more for you

Make that statement to be your opinion instead. Because you do not know.
