                Here's a headlight..

                Could be very useful for the observer when on a nightbombing mission..

                                LW “Gestirnpeilscheibe” 127-121 B-2"

                                Mike Heuer has an old friend who served in the Luftwaffe. Here is his response regarding this device:
                                "Dear Mike,

                                During my education on the "Blindflugschule" - sort of IFR-school - we had to learn all methods of navigation, even such to use the stars - like seamen determine position on sea by using a sextant or octant and the sun.

                                I never used it live, but we had to determine position in training. For this, you need the angle between the longitudinal axis of the aeroplane and the fixed star, i.e. Sirius, Arctur, or the moon and the Azimut = angle of elevation of the star, and a lot of tables and the exact time.

                                To measure the angle between longitudinal axis and the stars position we used the "Gestirnspeilscheibe" ( ~Star bearing disc ~) which was fixed in a dome on top of the fuselage (in big aeroplanes, planned to cross the atlantic..) The picture showes 180,2°, but the measurement is not valid, because the water-level is not correct . . .

                                My best

                                Ernst"<!-- / message -->
