    breat eagle

This thread is heating up !! I'm enjoying it ... just picked up this eagle which IMO is private purchase . .buyer said possible "French made" .. not sure what evidence he has to make that claim. Eagle has an interesting thread design with three different types. Eagle has been removed from uniform.

This was purchased at the OVMS show in Wilmington Ohio yesterday . Enjoy !!

"French made" seems to to be a term that is used by dealers to describe any eagle that is unusual, or different to the standard German pattern. Really, "Foreign made" would probably be more honest, as there is nothing that would indicate an eagle was made by a tailor in France rather than a tailor in Belgium.

"French maid" means something else, nothing to do with eagles, but very interesting anyway!

This photo appeared recently on the Forum and shows that some of these private purchase eagles looked so similar from both sides which resulted on rare occasion that the eagle was attached backwards:

It seems to have happened more often than we would think possible. I have posted the one original studio portrait that I have of a back-to-front eagle in this thread, and it is great to have your example here too (Many thanks!). I have always wondered if it happened purely by mistake, or if it was a subtle kind of protest from someone who was not entirely committed to the national socialist cause. It is hard to see how anyone could make such a mistake, because the backs of these eagles is never as presentable as the front.

                          Hi Everyone,

It has been a while since I posted an update, because it is hard to find good original pictures of private purchase eagles on service tunics. I have bought another one, and not only is it private purchase eagle, but it was sewn on face down, so the reverse of the eagle is on display. Why did people not notice this???? Oh well; it happened, as it did for this unteroffizier anwarter, who has embellished his tunic with what look like M38 einheits litze on dark green wool backing, and a private purchase eagle.
