    .....

Here is another letter that I believe is signed by General Hellmuth Volkmann, commander of the Legion Condor, on 30 October 1938. I would sure appreciate some translation help here but it appears to be some sort of a recommendation or commendation.

So he appears to have acted at higher command levels as a liason and translation officer in Spain and then North Africa between Italian and German commands etc. The second document is his "report card" from his commanding officer General Lt. Volkmann indicating he has done an excellent job as liaison and it recommends that he remain assigned to his duties etc.

This to me is what it is all about, putting these things back into their historical contexts through archival research and reconstructing past events in the the lives of the people that used these things for posterity and future generations - and I really like the pretty colors.

              Duties

              Hi Mike,

Your Oberst appears to have been assigned to various liaison positions during the Spanish Civil war and later he was an assistant to the German military attache in Rome. He cleaned up on "placekeeper" Spanish and Italian medals.

Do you mean the interview series from the Army History Center or is it an actual manual?

This is the only thing I can find that Heggenreiner was involved in post-war, in the US Army Guide to Foreign Military Studies, 1945-1954.

Hi, that is what I thought they were, these are part of a huge unpublished series of interviews and debriefings for specific topics etc. Have you gotten copies of these yet? I know people at the Marshall Center and the US Army History Center. I need to request a couple copies to for Nebel guys.

                            An update ...

Just an update on the display of this Waffenrock ...

Knowing that I could probably never find a ribbon bar that matched this Officer's awards and deciding it should be as of just before the war in 1939, I contacted Mike Holverson ("The Marshals Baton") who had been recommended to me and who could produce reproduction ribbon bars. They are made in Germany. Mike immediately had the one made that would be appropriate and his partner also recommended the "south German style fold" and what you see below is what was produced -- and in very short time.

I never thought I would display reproduction awards with my period uniforms but in this case, I made an exception and am very pleased with the quality. The devices are a bit bright -- so you would not mistake it for original -- but very nice in appearance. I would recommend Mike's service.

On the ribbon bar are the awards that Hauptmann Heggenreiner would have worn -- before his promotion to Major in 1939:

Incidentally, I added the WWI Black Wound badge as he is recorded having been awarded this and is seen wearing in photos. I took a guess on the sports and rider's badges -- based on the size of the loops. In his efficiency reports, it is recorded he was a good rider.
