Gebirgsjaeger Officer's Waffenrock

Gentlemen,

Just received today from an old friend -- a named Gebirgsjaeger Hauptmann's Waffenrock, dated 1936. The officer was a WWI veteran and career officer. He was promoted to Oberst in 1942 and served under Erwin Rommel in North Africa.

Thanks to various people on this forum, we were able to decipher the nametag in it right away and put a face to the uniform.

More info and photos as I get them. It just arrived less than an hour ago.

Thats a nice uncommon to find tunic, and in great looking condition to include the continuity of the original owner.

Gentlemen,

While I have gotten a great deal of info on this Officer already, I am anxious to obtain his NARA files.

I have written two people who have either done this for me in the past -- or said they did -- and have had no responses. I would appreciate knowing of anyone who can dig this out of the NARA.

Hello...I'm sorry to break the good news here but I think the story is rubbish...

The photo provided was sold on ebay some time ago, I even got the same portrait in my collection...(and some others of the same unit)

Why is there no edelweiss on the tunic ? The edelweiss must be on a GJ tunic, otherwise the person in question wasn't a qualified gebirgsjäger!

The Edelweiss was not worn until May 1939 and the tunic dates from 1936. Have to have the service file to follow his trail but if he was in North Africa at some point he transfered out of GJ for a staff position etc. . Note the small ribbon bar too. I have tunic for a guy from the same unit without an edelweiss and he transfered to a line Infantry unit in early 1939- No sleeve patch.

This is one of my favorite named tunics- Heinrich Baumann, he transfered out of GJR 98 before May of 1939 and was line infantry and later KIA. No edelweiss but 100% correct.
