I'm presuming this is the white version once offered by SM Wholesale? It shares some common characteristics.

Back to the Zenker/BAHA jacket: I'm still looking to reconcile the waistband/zipper configuration of this jacket as construction-wise it's the same as the blue and I've found no images of white jackets sharing this pattern. I also do not believe this is a faded blue jacket as it has been underground for 65 years and not exposed to light. The color is too consistent across the jacket to support fading.

The wool remnants near the collar are still perplexing as they imply the floppy wool collar was once there. I'm now wondering if the wool remnants might be bits of an underlying woolen uniform (fliegerbluse)? All in all, very frustrating that the parts of the jacket that would provide conclusive evidence (sleeve button, collar, etc) are missing.

I've seen parachute packs, which are green, that had turned into colorless material when coming outoff the wet ground..

Concerning clothing, cotton seems to fade quickly, while other fabrics easily keep their color..

The posts on the Daggers forum seem to indicate the pilot was recovered wearing his kanalhose -- which had retained their color. Assuming he was wearing the unlined version, I would presume the trousers to be made of similar fabric as the jacket?

Well, there're different "brands" of fabric, they don't have to match..
I still think the cotton clothes will loose their color some way or another, then there's the fabric, let's say like the blue eletrical jackets and pants and that's totally different, the weaving is different and the fabric thread that is used is "real" color and will not fade to white..
There're many pics showing a color difference between jacket and pants, they might be 2 different makers or not matching fabric..

In this case I think we're talking about a difference in fabric between the jacket and pants.., because I think the white jacket in question is a blue version which lost its dye in the wet ground.

              Hi Jos,
I wasn't directly comparing the fabric types but rather the relative fading between them. This is really just guessing as we don't have a photo of the kanalhose and it's just opinion of the Daggers poster that the color was intact.

I'm still not completely sold on the faded-blue theory although it certainly is compelling.

I've written BAHA as I would really like to read a text of the state of the site as it was excavated. Particularly, was the cockpit wet? They reference rain during the recovery but I don't know how wet the soil would be 21 feet underground. There doesn't appear to be any rust on the metal components. I would also like to know how intact the cockpit area was. Was it an airtight hollow for all these years? Did it fill with water? Was it filled with dirt?

                      I've a new fact ..

During the crash the place of impact was soaking wet, people believed that the plane went 30 feet deep into the soft ground, that's why they left the pilot for what he was ..

                      Jos.

                        Jos,
I'm surprised the Luftwaffe didn't make more of an effort to recover their downed man. I would presume that a 30-foot deep impact crater would remain somewhat of an open hole for some time. Your earlier post referenced the back half of the plane (armoured seat and rearwards) was found. Was that at the time of the crash or part of the modern recovery?

It sounds as if the hole was simply filled in rather than an attempt to clear the wreckage and remove the remains. Considering the impact, I'm surprised there was much left of the pilot. Maybe this is why no serious attempt to recover him was ever made?

No, they found the back half of the plane and under/next to it the cockpit and motor ...
                            let's say a bit like this : \ _

The complete plane + pilot were removed from the ground in 1998 by the BAHA crew..
That's the story, he was shot, crashed and disappeared into the soaking wet clay and was left there till 1998..

I've seen many pics of stuff that was found in the fat clay, some items just look like new, even shoulderstraps etc.., clay preserves items very well, as long as there's no oxygen involved.

It might be that the damage on the jacket was caused by the impact, I'm rather curious what was left of this man.

More torment. Someone somewhere in the world has one of these jackets and is sitting back and making us suffer. Best, Bill
