That is, not every uniform in a particular depot was manufactured in that location. No doubt that Munich had its own depot(s)...but so what. I suppose the same thing could be better determined one way or the other were we able to translate all the RbNrs found on uniforms.

    Hi Scott,

Your absolutely correct. As I understand it each depot contracted out its requirements to the manufacturer of its choice. Generally they appeared to utilize sources within their particular area of responsibility. However there are numerous examples of Depots storing/issuing uniforms manufactured outside its area of responsibility. Paul Opalla and Co. for example made tunics for both the Berlin and Munich depots.

I think my major concern is the LAGO Munich stamp. I have never seen an undisputed original stamp (on any tunic) with that manufacturer.Obviousily I've only seen a tiny percentage of the original tunics out there. I would be interested in seeing an original tunic stamped LAGO Munich.

In regards to depots on "area of responsibility".

    I found this quite interesting.

It's on ebay right now and is evidence that at least one Heeresbekleidungsamt, in this case Heeresbekleidungsamtes Brünn, which is is now in the Czech Republic, was corresponding with a well known badge and buckle maker in Dresden, Hermann Aurich. That's quite some distance away, especially when considering the late 1944 date.

Apologies if this is boring. I'm doing this for myself more than anything so I can come back to it when needed.

        Ben,

This is not boring at all, there are others that just don't know about this thread yet, or are out of town, etc. There was quite a bit of discussion on the code numbers, or whatever they are that are seen in many panzer wraps. Many SS wraps have 627, 527, and 327, and here are 4 different late war Luftwaffe wrappers that have the same 3 number code of some sort in them. You may be opening up an area of discussion that really needs to be explored further.

I'm surprised that there are not more of the German speaking members participating. Maybe you should snag that envelope for evidence.

This reminds me of the F349 markings in this HBT Heer M43 cap. Although I have not been comfortable with this particular cap and also the markings are in style more in accordance to RAD then HEER practice, it is interesting to note that the same F349 appeared in the Polizei officer Panzer set The Ruptured Duck was recently offering. Both the wrap and trousers had this same marking but all three in a slightly different print.

This 3-digit code reminds me of the 842 markings on Hans Brandt DAK overseas caps. A few years ago I had a tied-together bundle all marked the same, all the same size 55. But I've always been told for many years that in the case of these DAK caps with the code 842 that , the 8 is for the month ( August ) & the 42 is for the year. It would make sense date-wise with the 842 DAK caps having an August 1942 date, but in the case of other 3-digit marked caps using this DAK? system, such as the cap above dated 1944 with the 349 code, it cannot apply.

Someone must have looked into this before now and knows the answer, no?

                  Far from boring Ben
Give a man an opinion and you feed him for a day,
teach a man to use the "search" function on the WAF and you feed him for a lifetime.

Here is a very interesting hat with the location and the #343 code in it. Only one number off the code in the panzer wraps I posted. This hat has the maker name and address which may add further to the research.

I was conducting some research into another HG cap today which brought me back to this thread.

I'm now fairly sure that the "BII" etc Heeresbekleidungsamt stamps seen in so many cloth items do NOT refer to a secondary Berlin depot but rather to the Bernau or "Berlin-Bernau" depot. The Berlin depot in Lehrter Straße was moved to Bernau in 1942.
Wonder why so many BII stamped Pz hats ended up with Soviet capture stamps? Read the link.
                        http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heeresb...ungsamt_Bernau

The one in Bernau is a huge depot with seperate buildings, hence the BII or BIII stamps.

As a sidekick in the 3 letter code discussion and as reference to my post in #155 ; herewith the same F349 code in a M43 SS tunic (besides already witnessed in headgear, Pol Panzer trousers and wrapper).

                                RAD Depot stamp.

Ben, I know you asked me sometime ago to post the RAD Depot stamp on my Pz. overseas, well I finally got around to it. It is very faint marking because washing I'm sure. I'll post 2 photos and see what happens. The cap was shown sometime ago on the forum and received a , Here goes. Thanks. Dave.
