On a different note, a friend at the SOS saw two original CBs which was two more than I saw at the last MAX.

A 2nd pattern badge was for sale for 8500.00 and another, possibly a 1st pattern that was not for sale but was part of a display along with a 1st pattern BO.

After much review I agree that this badge is an original modified badge. Still can't figure out the attachment on the reverse though.

I believe you have been lucky again. If you compare it to the usual fakes, then you might come to the conclusion this is an original. But compare it to an original, and you'll find numerous details missing and a couple casting flaws, too.

As per our conversation there is too much right about this badge to call it a repro. Some of the differences could be due to enhancing the photo which can cause distortions. As I mentioned not enough doubts for me to say that this badge is not right. Also, why would a faker go to all the trouble of putting the weird attachment on the reverse rather than just installing a simple pin?

It came with the large GPB in the same auction from private, the GPB number corrsponds to a Coburg, blood order winner. They came together Andreas, the same guys family....

Erich, the back attachments made me feel more comfortable with the badge being that tome this is the kind of alteration done on period badges that is difficult to fake. Thats just me.

I agree--the reverse hardware set up makes sense for an extremely secure uniform pocket attachment.

I've never seen such an attachment setup befoe; how would it work on a tunic or Brown Shirt? I suppose one could have two holes at the appropriate distances cut into the pocket and stitched in buttonhole fashion, and then pass a form of a cotter key through each hole and anchor each one to the badge. Sounds too complex for my taste, though I believe the Coburg Badge is quite a heavy piece -- I've never actually held a real one in my hand. Such an attachment configuration as I have described should provide added support through the pocket, such as is provided by a disc mounting of an EK1.

The pocket would have 2 small stitched eyelets for the metal loops applied to the reverse of the badge; once the piece was mounted on the pocket, the spring rings would be attached to the loops from the inside of the pocket.
The badges are not particularly heavy, but the awarded types have a very flimsy pin and catch.
