I some part of Germany (specially in the south: Bavaria) and in Austria still today photographs of the deceased persons are fixen on the grave cross.

It seems that there is written "Meldehund" - "messenger dog" in the last line.

Dog's grave

Hi Gerdan,

Thanks for your help. Too bad the dog's name isn't on the marker. Still we at least know what his assignment was. Also, that some soldier cared enough for him that he took the time to bury the dog, as well as marking the grave.

Messenger dogs have been held in hight esteem in the German army. They mostly did a very good job and helped to reduce human casualities. They have been real comrades of the soldiers and shared all troble with them.
