    @ w petz:
you may be right, it should be better to judge from the original pic.
is there a photo paper brand on the back?

        Taube,

It's postcard size with no paper markings on the reverse...typical of many POW photos that I have in my collection. I've seen these Grey M43 one button types of caps used by the SS and no remains of a breast eagle on the jacket...unfortunately you cannot see most of the sleeve where an SS Eagle would normally be located. I'm pretty sure he is a POW.

          Ss pow

          Hi Bill,

I heard it was quite common for SS POW's to remove any indication of their SS service prior to capture. I heard they did this to lessen the rough treatment they'd receive otherwise. Not sure if this is true or not.

There is plenty of photographic evidence of the above...

I believe that to be especially true if captured by the Russians. I read somewhere that a Panzermann in Berlin removed his totenkopfs from his tabs so he wouldn't be confused with the SS as they were being shot upon capture.

Sep09 - FJ POW Canada. Can't miss him as he is the only one wearing his badge

                      Great photo

From my observations of this thread, The Canadians seem to be very relaxed about letting POW's keep their awards etc and not to denazifiy them either.

They obviously weren't thinking of my collecting interest for denaz awards some 70 years later
