However, maybe additional research could place one of these men at Tulln.

Just for information sake, here are three Heinz Fischer's who were Luftwaffe officers and seem to have been commissioned as officers late enough to be Gefreiter in 1938.

FISCHER, Heinz. (DKG). 26.02.43 Lt., 3./KG 100 awarded the DKG.

FISCHER, Heinz. (DOB: 22.05.17 in Berlin-Dahlem). (R, DKG). 22.06.40 Oblt. in 1.(St)/Tr.Gr. 186. 04.05.42 Oblt., awarded the Ehrenpokal. 12.05.42 Oblt. and Stafü 9./St.G. 1, WIA - shot down during an attack on tanks near Lipovik and force-landed near the front lines;wounded in left arm but able to return to unit the next day. 27.05.42 awarded DKG, 9./St.G. 1. 26.10.42 Staka 9./St.G. 1. 1942 in III./St.G. 1 (to 26.10.42). 26.10.42 Hptm. and Staka 7./St.G. 1 (or 9./St.G. 1?), KIA - in Ju 87 D-1 (J9+AL) during a mission over the Volkhov salient north of Lake Ilmen; hit by AA fire 1 km NE of Strelitzi. 25.11.42 Hptm., posthumously awarded a Ritterkreuz, Staka 9./St.G. 1. Credited with 465 missions.

FISCHER, Heinz. 24.08.42 Lt., awarded the Ehrenpokal. 30.07.43 Oblt. and Beobachter (observer) in NAGr. 1, KIA – in Fw 189 A-2 rammed by a shot up aircraft and crashed at Orlova in the Donets Basin area.

Thanks Paul. I don't know the LW rank structure that well and forgot that enlisted men could also be pilots. You are correct about the possibilities and I would love to make him one of these highly awarded pilots, but unless someone has rolls from the student company at Tulln, it may be impossible to figure out as it seems to be a very common name. I also wondered why air school personnel took part in the occupation of the Sudetenland, but I suppose he could have earned the medal earlier during the occupation as part of another LW unit and received the award later when he was at the school.
