I can read "Nasenscheidewand", which is cartilage in the nose. Perhaps something like a deviated septum or similar.

Regarding #5313 Chip M has ID'ed the kneeling soldier as an Austrian NCO so I think you can eliminated Berlin as the location. Now I question whether the Austrians used the "Ich hatt' einen Kameraden..." song or phrase?
