Judging by the context of the photos and the sport badge he proudly displays, one can assume that he may have been a local sports star and therefore featured prominently in the group photos.

I agree that this SS Schutze looks like a long lost relative of Jay Leno, i'm also guessing that he came came close to real "bombs" but didn't have a chance to take a photo with it during his time in the SS.
