          Number: 9135

Oberfeldwebel Rudolf Frank (1920-1944) - collection of military awards, certificates, documents, and photographs of the (posthumous) Oak Leaves recipient and flying ace of the Night Fighter Squadron 3,

who had undertaken 183 combat missions and 45 air victories before his aircraft was hit by parts of a crashing Lancaster on 27 April 1944. He failed to save his plane after the exit of his crew, among them his radio operator, the Knight's Cross recipient Hans-Georg Schierholz (cf. the following lot). He wore his Knight's Cross, the German Cross in Gold, the Pilot's Badge and the Squadron Clasp for Short-range Night Fighters in Gold when he crashed, which explains the bad or restored condition of the decorations. A photo of the medal cushion displayed at his funeral depicts the awards in this condition.
Awards with certificates: German Cross in Gold,
four hollow rivets, enamel damaged, pin added, Zimmermann type, light-weight version. With certificate from 17. Oct. 1943 with counter-signature by Loerzer, damaged, glued. Squadron Clasp for Short-range Night Fighters in Gold
, fine zinc, migrated gold plating, bent, non-ferrous metal pin with remains of gold plating, the back with incised name "R. Frank". With certificate from 14 January 1944 with OS of Squadron Commander Helmut Lent,
damaged, glued. Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross 1939,
the damaged silver rim stamped "800", the iron core inserted incorrectly into the border after the crash, the suspension loop stamped "800" and "65", medal ribbon. With a temporary certificate of ownership
with award on 6 April 1944, dated 12.4.1944.
Temporary certificate of ownership for the Oak Leaves for the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross 1939
with award on 20 July 1944, dated 17 August 1944, OS Colonel General Loerzer.
Other awards: Goblet of Honour for Outstanding Achievements in the Air War
in silver-plated version (tarnished), the base ring engraved "Unteroffizier Rudolf Frank am 9.8.43", height 20.7 cm. Iron Cross 1939 2nd and 1st Class. Pilot's badge,
made by "Bruder Schneider A.G. Wien", pin re-soldered, incised name "R. Frank". Gilt silver ring of the NJG 3
, engraved on the inside "Uffz. Frank". Gold ring with Luftwaffe eagle and engraved "Lisa 1943".
Certificates and documents: receipt from the Junkerswerke
for the Ju 88 with number 751095 from 17 April 1944 with OS of Rudolf Frank. 18 confirmations given by eye witnesses of an air victory on 3/4 March 1943
in signed copy, with a signed congratulatory note by Gen. Lieutenant Schwabedissen (Commander of the 2nd fighter division).
Journal of Rudolf Frank from 1 December 1943 - circa 21 April 1944. Approximately 30 pages with ink notes (barely legible), the last entries dealing with "the Knight's Cross" (no date), "13.4.44 Ju 88", "... on 18.4.44 command for take-off at last...20 April is now drawing near, the Führer's birthday. Last year I took off for three missions. We're expecting something similar today... ", with handwritten report from 25 December 1943.
          Two photo albums

with over 160 pictures. Gift album "To the Wife of the Knight's Cross Recipient Ofw. Frank in recognition of his service in the I. NJG 3" with rare, predominantly large-size pictures of Frank and many comrades, before night take-offs, the squadron mascot, of the awarding of the Knight's Cross, and numerous pictures of his funeral. The second (posthumously compiled) album with several private pictures, among them many portraits of Frank.
Also a condolence telegram from Hitler to the widow and letters from the Generals Burgdorf and Schmid, various newspaper articles, a portrait drawing of Frank, and a post-war oil painting of Frank in uniform with Knight's Cross, 81 x 55 cm. (all quotes translated).
Significant set of documents and awards of one of the most successful night fighter aces of the Luftwaffe.

And here we have two photos of the cross up for auction at HH. A good K&Q.
The cross shown earlier in this thread is bad.

What was the final disposition of this conversation? It got very confusing and convoluted... did Hermann Historia sell the "real" grouping of awards or are they at Germania International? There seem to be at least two versions of the same grouping, one with a real mangled KC and one with a replica replacement KC...

... and does anyone know where the original documents and pokal went?
